PORTLAND, Ore. -- The University of Oregon women's basketball team rode its first 100-point scoring game in nearly seven years to a massive 102-36 victory over Prairie View A&M at the eighth annual Pape Jam on Saturday afternoon.
Gabrielle Richards had 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to lead the Ducks (6-1), who came into the contest as the second-best defensive team in Division I based on points allowed.
“We just certainly are a bigger and stronger team, and we took advantage of that,” said Oregon head coach Bev Smith. “We really demanded that each player played hard, knowing that in 10 days we will have a formidable Pac-10 opponent in UCLA.”
Kedzie Gunderson added 15 points and Brandi Davis had 14 for the Ducks, who were never challenged by the Lady Panthers, building up a 45-point halftime lead.
“We know that our defense is really strong and we've spent a lot of time making better reads on offense,” said Gunderson, who established a career-high in points and was 7-of-8 from the field. “Our whole goal for the game was to stay focused and make plays. It's hard to concentrate in a game like that.”
Phatima McNary was the Texas team's only player to score in double figures. She had 15 points. The Lady Panthers (1-4) shot just 18.7 percent for the game, making just 11 field goals.
With just one starter over 6-feet, Prairie View was overmatched from the beginning, with Richards, the sophomore center from Seymour, Australia, having her way inside.
“We knew we had a size advantage,” Richards said. “We did a good job staying disciplined.”
The 66-point margin of victory isn't a record for the Ducks, who beat Hawaii by 81 points on Jan. 16, 1979.
Oregon hits the road to face St. Mary's (Calif.) on Monday and Idaho State on Thursday before opening Pac-10 play on Dec. 20 at UCLA.
