EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Reserve guard Cicely Oaks hit 10-of-10 free throws on her way to a career-high 15 points, leading Oregon to a 70-40 victory over Drake on Monday.
Brandi Davis added a dozen points off the bench for the Ducks (5-1), who shot 49 percent and got at least two points from all 12 of their players. "Tonight, we played a lot of people and they all contributed," said head coach Bev Smith. "When we play as a team, we pass the ball very well. It's all about anticipating the next pass and reading the defense." Jill Martin and Jane Horkey scored eight points apiece for Drake (2-2), which shot 22 percent from the field and made 2-of-19 attempts from 3-point range. Oaks had 11 points to lead the Ducks to a 35-19 halftime advantage. "Cicely needs to be rewarded for her hard work this summer," Smith said. "She has this desire to play and finally she has been able to express herself." The Ducks never trailed, pulling away from an early 7-7 tie with a 14-0 run. The Bulldogs connected on just two field goals in the final 14:54 of the first half. Oaks hit two free throws to give the Ducks a 51-27 edge midway through the second half, and the Ducks scored the final 11 points of the game to take their biggest lead. The Oregon defense forced the Bulldogs into 20 turnovers. Duck opponents are averaging 44.3 points per game this season and shooting 27.9 percent from the field. The Ducks are idle until Dec. 10, when they play Prairie View A&M at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland. The game against the Lady Panthers is the first half of the annual Pape Jam double-header with the UO men's team. "Tomorrow, we start with a day off," Smith said. "We need to get some rest and get the little bumps and bruises out of the way. It will be a great week to work on conditioning and get ready for the Pac-10 season."
