Men's Tennis Picks Up Two Victories

EUGENE ? Oregon improved to 3-1 after defeating both Gonzaga and Linfield, 7-0, at the Student Tennis Center Saturday. Nationally ranked seniors Sven Swinnen and Manuel Kost picked up their third singles dual wins of the season.
Against the Zags, Oregon jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches. Freshman Chris Liao and senior Chad Wilson teamed together for the first time this season and produced a 9-7 victory over GU's Reid Arthur and Dru Ernst at the No. 2 position. Sophomores Eric Pickard and Vlad Pino, also playing for the first time this season, won in convincing fashion at the No. 3 position, defeating Cooper Fratt and Marco Pineda, 8-3. Swinnen and junior Arron Spencer completed the sweep, winning at the No. 1 spot.
In singles action, the Ducks swept all six position ? five in straight sets. Kost, ranked 57th nationally, delivered a come-from-behind three set victory over the Zags' Bryce Cooper, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4. Sophomore Eric Pickard grabbed his first dual win of the season, defeating Marco Pineda, 7-6, 6-3, at the No. 6 position.
Against NCAA Division III Linfield, the Ducks continued their strong play, sweeping both singles and doubles portions. In doubles, juniors Thomas Bieri and Markus Schiller won their fifth match of the season (5-3) at the No. 1 position.
In singles, freshman Chris Liao grabbed his first dual win of his Duck career, defeating Linfield's John Yates, 6-0, 6-3.
Swinnen, ranked 16th, won his team-leading 10th win of the season (10-3), winning in straight sets at the No. 1 position. Spencer, a Eugene native and Sheldon High School alum, picked up his first win of the season, winning in straight sets at the No. 4 spot.
Next weekend, the Ducks continue dual play at home when they host a doubleheader against St. Mary's (Sat., 11 a.m.) and Eastern Washington (Sat., 5 pm.) at the Student Tennis Center.
