Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader

EUGENE ? The University of Oregon men's tennis team (5-1, 0-0) swept a doubleheader Saturday at the Student Tennis Center, defeating Saint Mary's and Eastern Washington by the score of 7-0. Nationally ranked senior Sven Swinnen picked up two victories on the day and is now one win (70) from becoming Oregon's all-time career leader.
In doubles, Oregon made easy work of the Gaels, sweeping all three position. Juniors Thomas Bieri and Markus Schiller won their team-leading sixth victory (6-2) of the season, defeating SMC's Martin Marechal and Adam Favre, 8-6.
In singles, the Ducks won all six matches, including five in straight sets. Eugene native Arron Spencer (Sheldon High School) won his second match of the season, defeating the Gaels' Andre Sion, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5 position.
Against Eastern Washington, the Ducks dominated the doubles portion, posting wins at all three positions. Through six dual matches, the Ducks are 25-3 overall in dual doubles play.
In singles, No. 16 Swinnen won his team-leading 12th match of the season, defeating EWU's Brian Garfield, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot.
At the No. 4 position, sophomore Vlad Pino grabbed his fifth dual victory of the season, defeating Andrew Cohoe in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. After winning only two matches as a freshman, Pino is now 8-5 on the year and 5-1 in dual play.
Fellow sophomore Eric Pickard is now a perfect 3-0 in dual play after defeating the Eagles' Keithan Gregg, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5 position.
"It was nice to snag two wins today," first-year Oregon head coach Kevin Kowalik said. "We've mixed up the lineups a little and given everyone a chance to pick up some playing time early in the season which we think is going to help us down the road."
Next weekend, the Ducks take on BYU, in Provo, Utah (Sat., noon). Last season, Oregon defeated BYU, 5-2.
