Sunriver Course Proves Challenging for Ducks in Season Opener
09/20/04 | Women's Golf
SUNRIVER, Ore. -- The Oregon women's golf team struggled with the challenging Meadows Course in its season opener Monday and finished 24 strokes above par in the opening round of the NCAA Fall Preview. The Ducks were the first team off the tee early Monday morning and wet conditions, brought on by a 45-minute frost delay, made the 6,312-yard, par-71 lay out play even longer.
Senior Johnna Nealy and sophomore Kim McCready led the Ducks with 4-over 75s. Nealy, from Grants Pass, Ore., had five bogeys in her first eight holes, but recovered nicely, playing her final 10 holes in 1-under, including her only birdie of the day on the par-4 14th. McCready, on the other hand, was 1-over through the front nine, but struggled with four bogeys in the homestretch that were offset only by a birdie on the par-5 17th. Both were tied for 46th overall.
The Ducks also counted a 77 from junior Erin Andrews and an 81 from junior Michelle Timpani. Andrews played brilliantly through 14 holes with birdies on 11 and 13 and was 1-over heading to the 15th. But that was where her round began to come unraveled with a bogey. She followed that with another bogey at 16 and then found big trouble with a uncharacteristic triple bogey on the par-5 17th. Andrews was tied for 65th overall.
Duke's Brittany Lang shot a 7-under 64 to take the individual lead and push the Blue Devils into first place at 1-under 283. Washington was next at 285, followed by Georgia at 286, New Mexico at 287 and Oklahoma State at 289.
Oregon was last of the 21 teams after the first day of competition with a 308, but was only 12 strokes out of the upper division. Immediately ahead of the Ducks were Texas A&M (307), Vanderbilt (306), Washington State (304), South Carolina (303), Oregon State (303), Texas (301), Stanford (300), USC (300), California (298) and Tennessee (296).
The second of three rounds will be played Tuesday and with an afternoon tee time, the Ducks are hoping for drier playing conditions than Monday.
