Ducks Lose in Regional Playoff for Bid to NCAA Golf Championships
05/08/04 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. ? Johnna Nealy's birdie on the second-to-last hole during Saturday's NCAA West Regional lifted Oregon into a three-way playoff against No. 15 Texas and Washington State for the eighth and final spot to the NCAA women's golf championships, but the Ducks' luck ran out there as the Longhorns defeated WSU and Oregon on the first playoff hole to advance.
Still there was room for optimism Saturday as the tie for eighth represented Oregon's best showing at the NCAA West Regional since finishing seventh in 2000, and all five golfers who competed at the 6,159-yard, par-72 Stanford Golf Course return next season.
Nealy, a junior from Grants Pass, Ore., shot a 74 Saturday and finished tied for 25th at 8-over 224. She had three birdies and five bogeys in the final round. Her last birdie -- the one that got Oregon into the playoff -- came on the 144-yard, par-3 eighth hole. Nealy and the Ducks started their final round on hole No. 10.
Sophomore Therese Wenslow also shot a 74 Saturday and finished tied for 38th at 11-over 227. Wenslow was 2-under through 12 holes before going bogey-bogey-double bogey on holes 4, 5 and 6 for her only rough patch of the day. Sophomore Michelle Timpani closed with a 77 and tied for 47th at 230, while fellow sophomore Erin Andrews struggled with an 80 Saturday and tied for 51st at 232.
Second-ranked UCLA won the event by shooting a 2-under 286 Saturday. The Bruins finished with an 861 total to defeat No. 3 California by seven strokes. No. 23 Stanford was third at 883, while No. 12 Washington climbed from ninth Friday to finish fourth at 892. No. 8 Georgia was fifth at 900, No. 4 Ohio State was sixth at 901 and Arizona State finished seventh at 908. Those seven teams will join Texas at the NCAA Championships May 18-21 at Auburn.
As a team, 10th-seeded Oregon was consistent for the third consecutive day, shooting a 305 after rounds of 305 and 303 to open the tournament. The Ducks' 913 total matched Texas and Washington State, though the Longhorns nearly slid out of the top eight by shooting a 311 Saturday and WSU also dropped back following a 307.
Hannah Jun of UCLA shot a 1-under 71 Saturday to win medalist honors at 7-under 209. Allison Hanna of Ohio State was second at 211, while UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas and Anna Temple of California tied for third at 214.
