03/13/04 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 23-ranked Oregon women's tennis (9-7, 2-6) team can't seem to catch a break as they were defeated by the Washington State Cougars, 4-3. The loss was the Ducks seventh in a row after starting the season 9-0.
In similar fashion to Friday's match against Washington, Oregon dominated doubles play, picking up the doubles point. Daria Panova and Courtney Nagle defeated WSU's Chris Martinez and Orsolya Sallai, 8-1. Dominika Dieskova and Anna Leksinska won their 10th dual match, beating Lorena Arias and Zsofia Fodor, 8-4. At No. 3 play, Davina Mendiburu and Ester Bak picked up their team-leading 11th dual victory, taking down Amy Toth and Nora Gaal, 8-2.
Oregon ran into some bad luck in singles play, losing four of the six matches. Senior Courtney Nagle lost what looked to be a winnable match, retiring in the third set due to injury. Nagle was defeated by WSU's Lorena Arias, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (ret.). The match would of gave Oregon their fourth point and the win.
No. 8-ranked Daria Panova continued her winning ways, grabbing her third straight victory by defeating Orsolya Sallai, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 position. Freshman and No. 53-ranked Dominika Dieskova took down Nora Gaal, 6-3, 6-3.
Positions No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 belonged to the Cougars. WSU's Chris Martinez, Zsofia Fodor, and Amy Toth all picked up three set victories over the Ducks.
The match marked the final Pac-10 dual for the Ducks. Oregon has eight non-conference matches remaining, needing a solid finish in order to receive an NCAA Tournament bid.
Oregon travels to Fresno, Calif. to take on St. Mary's (March 21, 1 p.m.), Kansas State (March 22, 10 a.m.), and Missouri (March 23, 10 a.m.).
