Tennis Falls On Hard Times Against No. 1 Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. - For the first time all season, the No. 24 Oregon women's tennis (9-2, 2-1) squad failed to convert on the doubles point, dropping a 7-0 decision to No. 1 Stanford (10-0, 1-0).

The No. 27-ranked doubles duo of Daria Panova and Courtney Nagle were defeated by Stanford's No. 1-ranked Erin Burdette and Lauren Barnikow, 8-3. The loss drops Panova and Nagle to 6-3 in dual matches.

Stanford's Alice Barnes and Amber Liu took down freshman Dominika Dieskova and sophomore Anna Leksinska, 8-2. In the No. 3 position, No. 24-ranked Emila Anderson and Anne Yelsey defeated Davina Mendiburu and Ester Bak, 8-2.

In singles play, the Ducks were dominated by what looks to be the strongest team - top to bottom - in the country. The Cardinal swept all six positions and kept intact their undefeated season.

No. 7-ranked Daria Panova fell to No. 60 Amber Liu at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-0. The loss gives Panova a 21-5 overall record on the year. At the No. 2 position, Stanford's No. 16-ranked Alice Barnes, took care of senior Courtney Nagle, 6-2, 6-3.

Fresh off the first national ranking of her young career, the Ducks No. 46-ranked Dominika Dieskova was upended by No. 12 Erin Burdette, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8). Dieskova is now 7-4 in dual matches on the season.

Not letting up, the Cardinal continued to roll, as No. 24-ranked Lauren Barnikow defeated Davina Mendiburu, 6-2, 6-3. In No. 5 play, No. 26-ranked Theresa Loger took down Oregon's Ester Bak, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Monica Hoz de Vila dropped her first dual match of the year, losing to No. 73 Emila Anderson, 6-0, 6-1.

"It was good for us to get outside and play," said Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander. "I saw some good things out of the team. Stanford showed why they are the No. 1 team in the country. They really make you play, and if you are a little off, it is going to be a difficult day for you.

The Ducks continue their tough road trip, as they travel across the Bay to take on the No. 9 California Bears, Sat., Feb. 28, at Noon.
