02/27/04 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? The 17th-ranked University of Oregon softball team used a dominating offensive performance to defeat Southern Mississippi, 13-3, at the St. Joseph Aggie Invitational II in College Station, Texas Friday afternoon. Oregon finished the day 2-0 and improved to 10-4 on the season while the Golden Eagles dropped to 5-8. The Ducks defeated Penn State, 4-0, earlier in the day and have now won seven consecutive games.
"I thought we did an outstanding job of coming back strong in our second game," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "There was no let up offensively or defensively and I'm pleased with the way we played in back to back games."
Freshman Kayleen Hudson hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Ducks ended the game with season-highs in hits (11) and runs scored (13). It was Hudson's first home run of the season and Oregon's second grand slam of the season.
Oregon finished the game with fiver extra base hits ? two doubles and three home runs ? and was led by shortstop Breanne Sabol, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.Catcher Jenn Poore was 2-for-4 with two runs scored against Southern Mississippi and was 4-for-7 (.571) with three runs scored and a double on the day.
Senior pitcher Anissa Meashintubby picked up the win to improve to 4-1 this season while Southern Mississippi pitcher Danielle Wymer dropped to 0-3.The Ducks' potent offense proved to be too much for Southern Mississippi early in the game as Oregon went ahead 3-0 in the first inning after a two-run home run by freshman Ann Marie Topps ? her second of the season. Topps scored junior Ashley Richards, who was 2-for-2 with two walks.
Oregon's offense struck again in the second inning after Sabol drove in Kayleen Hudson and Dani Baird with her first home run of the season ? a three-run shot over the center field fence that put Oregon ahead, 6-0. Hudson had led off the inning with a double and Baird later walked with two outs in the inning.
Southern Mississippi right fielder Sarah Boyd hit her second home run of the season to pull the Golden Eagles within 6-1 with no outs in the bottom of the third inning and hit her second home run of game in the fifth inning to provide all of the scoring for Southern Mississippi.
With no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Oregon loaded the bases after a single each by Baird, Poore and Sabol. Richards then walked to bring in Baird and pinch hitter Heather Munson also walked to bring in Poore. Southern Mississippi pitcher Jessica Holaway then came in to relieve Wymer, but Julie Jaime drove in Sabol in the Ducks' next at bat to extend Oregon's lead, 9-1.
After Jessica Huerta singled with one out in the fifth inning, Boyd drove her in with a two run home run that cut the Ducks' lead to 9-3 before Hudson's home run cut the game short in the sixth inning.
Oregon returns to tournament action Saturday morning vs. Southern Mississippi at 8 a.m. (PST) and plays host Texas A&M at 2:45 PST.
