Dominating Offense, Flawless Defense Lead Softball To 4-1 Win Over No. 23 Texas A&M
02/28/04 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Timely hitting and flawless defense were just what the 17th-ranked University of Oregon softball team needed to fend off No. 23 host Texas A&M, 4-1, at the St. Joseph Aggie Invitational II in College Station, Texas, Saturday evening. Oregon improved to 12-4 overall this season and 4-0 in the tournament while the Aggies dropped to 11-8 overall 3-1.
Oregon has been dominant thus far in the tournament, scoring 33 runs on 43 hits in four games, including six home runs and seven doubles. Defensively, the Ducks were perfect vs. Texas A&M and have committed just three errors in the four games.
"This was a tremendous win for our team," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We wanted to come back after losing to them earlier and I thought we played a complete game both offensively and defensively. Our offense has been strong all weekend, but tonight our defense backed us up and made huge plays in a close game."
Junior Ani Nyhus (7-2) recorded her seventh win on the season, throwing the final 3 1/3 innings. Senior Annisa Meshintubby started for the Ducks, throwing 3 2/3 innings, scattering five hits, and giving up one earned run. Senior Lindsay Wilhelmson (2-3) took the loss for Texas A&M.
Freshman Kayleen Hudson finished the game 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored to lead the Ducks' offense. Hudson has been consistent all weekend, entering the final day hitting .636 (7-for-11) with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBI. Third baseman Ashley Richards and catcher Jenn Poore are hitting .555 and .533, respectively.
A trio of Oregon freshmen got the Ducks' offense going in the fourth inning after Ann Marie Topps reached on a fielders choice and Hudson followed with a double to deep center field to put runners at second and third. First baseman Kristi Leiter drove in Topps with a single through the right side and Hudson scored on the play after Aggie catcher Nicole Robinson dropped the throw at home and the Ducks led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
After a Duck double play in the bottom of the fourth inning, Texas A&M left fielder Jana James singled up the middle and scored on a double by Kristin Gunter to pull the Aggies within a run, 2-1.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Oregon shortstop Breanne Sabol singled through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Texas A&M second baseman Sherah Atkins then committed a crucial error, allowing Sabol to score an unearned run and extend the Ducks' lead to 3-1. A second error by Atkins in the seventh inning allowed Sabol to score again and put Oregon ahead 4-1.
The Ducks dropped an 8-3 decision to Texas A&M earlier this season at the Fiesta Bowl tournament in Phoenix as the Aggies scored eight runs on ten hits while the Ducks had eight hits, but left eight runners on base.
