Win Streak Continues As Ducks Run Rule Southern Mississippi, 12-1
02/28/04 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? The 17th-ranked University of Oregon softball team continued its win-streak and remained perfect at the St. Joseph Aggie Invitational II, defeating Southern Mississippi 12-1 in six innings Saturday morning at the Aggie Softball Field. With the win ? Oregon's eighth in a row ? the Ducks improve to 11-4 overall this season and 3-0 at the tournament while the Golden Eagles fell to 5-10 overall and 0-3 at the tournament.
"I like that we're continuing to build momentum," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We are starting to be more consistent with our offense and we've been able to get key hits throughout our line up. The biggest key is to continue to play and improve and not let up."
Oregon surpassed its season high in hits (15) after setting a new high with 11 vs. the Golden Eagles in a 13-3 win Friday. The Ducks hit three home runs in the game and two doubles and had 11 RBI in the game after setting a season-high in RBI (12) on Friday. In all, Oregon has scored 29 runs and has 33 hits in three games this weekend.
Sophomore pitcher Amy Harris picked up her first win of the season to improve to 1-0 while Jessica Holaway (2-3) took the loss.
With two outs in the first inning, freshman Kayleen Hudson ? who hit a walk-off grand slam against the Golden Eagles Friday ? continued to build on her RBI tally, driving in Ashley Richards and Beth Boskovich with a hard-hit infield single to put Oregon ahead 2-0. First baseman Kristi Leiter built on the Ducks' lead with another infield single that scored freshman Ann Marie Topps. Hudson also scored on the play after a throwing error by Southern Miss first baseman Ashley Davis and Oregon led 4-0 after the top of the first inning.
Southern Miss center fielder Heather Bell put the Golden Eagles on the board with her second home run of the season ? hit off the left field scoreboard in the third inning ? to cut the Ducks' lead to 4-1.
Boskovich, who finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, responded in the fourth inning with her fourth home run of the season to drive in catcher Jenn Poore and extend the Ducks' lead to 6-1. Boskovich has now matched her home run total from all of 2003 and has 12 RBI after driving in just 14 runs in all of last season.
The Golden Eagles threatened in the fifth inning, putting runners on first and second before Harris struck out three consecutive batters to end the inning. Harris finished the game with nine strikeouts and just two walks.
Poore, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, blasted a two-run home run off the left field scoreboard in the sixth inning to put Oregon ahead 8-1 and Topps hit the Ducks' second home run of the inning, scoring Richards and Boskovich Poore is now just four home runs shy of breaking into the top 10 all-time at Oregon. Poore was robbed of a home run in the top of the first inning when Southern Miss left fielder Diane Hammes reached over the fence to make the catch.
In all, Oregon scored six runs on seven hits in the sixth inning to take a 12-1 lead and secure the six-inning win.
The Ducks next face No. 23 Texas A&M at 2:45 p.m. PST.
