COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? The No. 17 University of Oregon softball (13-4) won its 10th-straight game and claimed the title at the St. Joseph's Aggie Invitational II with a 2-0 win over Penn State Sunday morning. The Ducks were 5-0 in the tournament and outscored opponents 35-5 over the three days. Penn State dropped to 1-9 on the year and finished the tournament 1-4.
Senior pitcher Anissa Meashintubby (5-1) tossed a one-hit complete game and struck out eight batters while walking none. Penn State had just two runners reach base in the game ? one on a hit and one on an Oregon error. It was Meashintubby's eighth career shutout and her first of the season.
"We put together a string of well-played games," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I thought we played very well on both sides of the ball and remained very consistent. This weekend is a tremendous accomplishment for our players."
Ashley Richards doubled to deep left center field to score shortstop Breanne Sabol in the first inning and give Oregon an early 1-0 lead. It was Richards' second double of the tournament and the eighth overall for the Ducks.
Catcher Jenn Poore added the Ducks' ninth double of the tourney in the third inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sabol. Poore then scored on a wild pitch by Penn State pitcher Missy Beseres (1-4). to put Oregon ahead 2-0.
The Ducks finished the tournament with 35 runs scored on 48 hits, including six home runs and 29 RBI.
Oregon returns to tournament action next weekend, traveling to Clearwater, Fla., for the Speedline Invitational.
