03/04/04 | Softball
CLEARWATER, Fla. ? The 14th-ranked University of Oregon softball team won its 12th-consecutive game Thursday afternoon ? the longest streak in school history ? at the Speedline Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. The Ducks opened the day with a 6-0 shutout over Rutgers before defeating Temple, 6-2, in the nightcap. With the win, Oregon improves to 15-4 overall this season and 2-0 at the tournament.
Oregon is off to its best start since going 22-4 to open the 1989 season and is currently hitting .307 as a team while limiting opponents to a .196 average. Sophomore Breanne Sabol was 4-for-4 against Rutgers Thursday and finished the day 5-for-5 with a walk and two sacrifice hits. Sabol hit her fourth double of the season against Rutgers and improved her season average to .429. Senior Anissa Meashintubby (6-1) allowed just one hit in five innings pitched vs. Rutgers while sophomore Amy Harris (2-1) had five strikeouts and one hit in four innings pitched to get the win vs. Temple. "I like the way that we are continuing to play with confidence," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen. "We have the feeling that we are going to win when we play and I think we're playing very good softball right now. The biggest thing is for us to continue to get better and continue to improve." The Ducks scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead over Rutgers. Freshman Kristi Leiter started the scoring rally with a two RBI single through the right side and catcher Jenn Poore drove in two more runs with a single to right center later in the inning. Sophomore Beth Boskovich drove in Poore with a single to right field to account for Oregon's fifth run. Freshman Ann Marie Topps hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to extend Oregon's lead to 6-0. Oregon picked up its offense again in the second game, scoring a run in the first inning on an RBI by Boskovich. The Ducks added another run in the third inning before taking a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on three Temple errors. Poore finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Boskovich was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Tournament action continues tomorrow for Oregon as it takes on Jacksonville University at 8 a.m. PST.
