Fired-Up Ducks Fight; Fall 3-0 To No. 12 California In Pac-10 Volleyball Opener

EUGENE ? The University of Oregon volleyball team opened Pacific-10 Conference with a hard-fought 30-19, 30-24, 30-26 loss to the 12th-ranked California Golden Bears before a wild crowd of 593 fans at McArthur Court. With the win, the Bears remain unbeaten on the season, improving to 9-0 overall, 1-0 Pac-10 while the Ducks fell to 3-6, 0-1.
"I am very happy with how we competed," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "We did a lot the things we said we wanted to do, but execution-wise Cal scored more points tonight." The Ducks seemed overmatched in the first two games, combining for just 19 kills to California's 37, but in Game 3, Oregon made offensive adjustments and came out matching Cal point for point until the end. The Ducks had 17 kills in the third game and hit .235 to nearly push the match to four games. Allyson Leavitt's kill tied the game at 12 and a kill by Lauren Westendorf later put Oregon ahead 16-15. Cal took the lead at 18-17 on a block assist by Alicia Powers and Jenna Brown and never trailed again eventually winning on a kill by Mia Jerkov. Jerkov led all players with 23 kills and added nine digs. Offensively, Oregon was led by sophomore outside hitter Jaclyn Jones and freshman Sarah Mason, who had 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Mason, who showed no fear of Pac-10 play was a consistent presence for the Ducks throughout the match and added three digs while hitting .250. "My attitude is about picking up my team and throwing them off," Mason said. "It brings energy to our team and that's just how I play." Defensively, libero Katie O'Neil led Oregon with 15 digs while Westendorf added 10 digs.
