Arizona State Edges Duck Volleyball In Final Pac-10 Match At McArthur Court
11/14/03 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE ? The elements seemed to be in place for the University of Oregon volleyball team Friday evening. The Ducks' freshman setter ? starting just her second match of the season ? was dishing out assists to her middle blockers and outside hitters with a calm, confident demeanor and the score was 1-1 heading into the third game, a margin Oregon had not encountered in Pac-10 play this season. But after battling in the third and fourth games, the Arizona State Sun Devils snapped their six match losing streak and the Ducks established a new school record with their 17th consecutive loss, falling 30-28, 27-30, 30-28, 30-28 in front of 1,127 fans at the final home match of the season.
"I look at this as a missed opportunity," fourth-year head coach Carl Ferreira said. "The players want to succeed and winning at home is important to our success. The fans were excellent and you want to reward them as well as yourself." In a sense, the Ducks did provide the fans with much to cheer about, consistently battling with Arizona State before succumbing to late errors that eventually led to defeat. Oregon had more kills (63-58) than Arizona State as well as more blocks (11-9), but committed 15 service errors and 32 attack errors while the Sun Devils had 13 and 30, respectively. Each team had three players with 10 or more kills and Oregon's overall attack percentage was .177 to ASU's .170. "We were in a situation to win," Ferreira said. "But we needed to finish it and gut it out." Freshman setter Heather Madison, playing for injured starter Jodi Bell, ran the offense with ease and finished the match with a career-high 53 assists. It is the most assists for an Oregon player this season and attackers Kelly Russell, Sarah Mason and Kristen Bitter reaped the benefits of Madison's play, finishing with 14, 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Bitter also hit a team-high .368 and her 11 kills is a new career-high. Bitter had a match-high 10 blocks to tally her first career double double. Freshman Erin Little also came off the bench to provide a spark and added eight kills, six digs and three blocks. Defensively, Katie O'Neil had a team-high 16 digs and Russell added 10 to finish the match with a double double. ASU was led by Mandy Stephens' 15 kills and Sarah Watkins added 13. The Ducks wrap up the 2003 season in the Bay Area next weekend. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
