Oregon Remains Ninth after Second Round at Stanford
10/18/03 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. ? The Oregon women's golf team's performance Saturday in the second round of the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate was a carbon copy of its opening day effort.
The Ducks carded a 296 for the second straight round and remained ninth of 18 teams playing the 6,107-yard, par-72 Stanford Golf Course. The consecutive rounds of 296 are Oregon's lowest of the season.
"We're just playing solid golf," said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. "We're striking the ball very well. We could probably putt a little better, but we are making some good birdies.
"We have pulled away from some teams that were behind us," she said. "And for the second straight day, we played well on a tough golf course against difficult competition."
Competing against five of the nation's top six teams, the Ducks once again held their own. Johnna Nealy, a junior from Grants Pass, Ore., shot a season-low 72 Saturday and was tied for 28th at 2-over 146. Sophomore Erin Andrews had a second round 73, while Kimberly McCready added a 74 -- matching a season low that the freshman set Friday -- that left both golfers tied for 34th at 4-over 148. Sophomore Therese Wenslow was tied for 48th at 150, following Saturday's 77.
Top-ranked Duke took over the lead in the team race with a 10-under 278 that left the Blue Devils at 559 and one stroke ahead of unranked Washington, which had a 280 on Saturday. No. 5 UCLA was third at 568, followed by No. 6 California at 577 and No. 9 Vanderbilt at 579 to round out the top five.
No. 4 New Mexico was sixth at 582, No. 2 Arizona was seventh with a 583, No. 19 Tulsa was eighth at 587, Oregon was ninth at 592 and Pepperdine was in 10th at 598. The Ducks were ahead of several traditional golf powers, including Texas A&M in 11th at 601, Arizona State 12th at 604 and No. 25 Stanford 13th at 605.
"We're probably playing in the toughest field we will be in all year prior to regionals and nationals," said Rouillard. "To come through with another 296 against this tough field was tremendous."
Oregon hasn't finished among the top 10 teams at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate since taking eighth in 1993. Since then, the Ducks' best showing was a 12th-place finish twice -- in 1995 and 1996. Last year, Oregon finished 17th.
The tournament continues with the final round scheduled for Sunday morning.
