Oregon Ninth after First Round at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. ? The Oregon women's golf team took its first step toward its first top 10 finish at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate in a decade with Friday's opening round 296 that left the team ninth of 18 schools playing the 6,107-yard, par-72 Stanford Golf Course.
Competing against five of the nation's top six teams, the Ducks held their own. Sophomore Therese Wenslow was tied for 29th at 1-over 73. Freshman Kimberly McCready and Grants Pass, Ore., junior Johnna Nealy were tied for 40th at 2-over 74 and sophomore Erin Andrews was tied for 46th at 3-over 75. The opening round at Stanford marked season lows for three Ducks -- Wenslow, McCready and Nealy.
Washington, not among this week's Sagarin/Golfweek top 25, was the surprising first round leader at 8-under 280. Top-ranked Duke was a stroke back at 281, followed by No. 5 UCLA at 283, No. 6 California at 289 and No. 4 New Mexico and No. 9 Vanderbilt tied for fifth at 290.
Other notables in the field included No. 2 Arizona in seventh at 292 and No. 19 Tulsa eighth at 293. Oregon's 296 was a stroke ahead of No. 25 Stanford and Pepperdine. Arizona State was tied for 13th with Texas A&M and Texas Tech at 304, while Oregon State was 16th at 306.
Oregon hasn't finished among the top 10 teams at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate since taking eighth in 1993. Since then, the Ducks' best showing was a 12th-place finish twice -- in 1995 and 1996. Last year, Oregon finished 17th.
The tournament continues with the second round scheduled for Saturday morning.
