Volleyball Falls 3-1 To 22nd-Ranked Eastern Washington In Non-Conference Action

CHENEY, Wash. - The University of Oregon volleyball team dropped a 30-25, 30-21, 22-30, 30-20 decision to No. 22 Eastern Washington in a non-conference match Monday evening in Cheney, Wash. With the loss, the Ducks fall to 9-6 overall, 0-2 Pac-10 and the Eagles remain perfect at 13-0. It was just the second time this season that Eastern Washington did not sweep its opponent and only the second game the Eagles have lost in a match thus far.
"This is the best team we have played so far this season," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "They are very disciplined within their system and they execute well. We did some things well tonight, but we need to execute at a higher level to compete at an elite level."
After dropping games one and two, Oregon came back in the third game and never trailed, taking its biggest lead, 24-13, after a service ace by freshman Jaclyn Jones. Eastern pulled within seven points late, but Lauren Westendorf put the game away with a kill down the line.
Eastern Washington responded in the fourth game by taking a 15-10 lead and never allowing Oregon to take the lead. The Ducks pulled within three points, 15-12, after a kill by Acevedo, but the Eagles rallied again to later take the lead 28-17 after a kill by middle blocker Monica Lynch. The Eagles had 18 kills in the game and committed no hitting errors to post a .529 clip.
Freshman Dariam Acevedo led Oregon for the first time this season, putting up 13 kills and 14 digs for her first collegiate double double. Senior Lindsay Closs added 11 kills, two digs and two blocks. Defensively, Lindsay Murphy had 14 digs and setter Jodi Bell added 10.
Eastern Washington was led by middle blocker Monica Lynch's match-high 16 kills. Janell Ruen also had a double double, putting up 11 kills and 15 digs.
Oregon returns to McArthur Court and Pac-10 action this weekend, hosting California Friday and Stanford Saturday.
