LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Oregon volleyball team battled with the 13th-ranked UCLA Bruins Friday evening, falling 30-28, 30-24, 30-20, in front of 826 fans at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. Oregon drops to 10-10 overall, 0-6 Pac-10, while UCLA is 12-6, 5-3.
Senior middle blocker was the only Oregon player in double digits with kills, finishing with a match-high 14 kills. Freshman Dariam Acevedo added eight kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Junior libero Lindsay Murphy also added 10 digs for her fifth Pac-10 match with 10 or more digs.
Oregon kept it close in the first game taking a 23-21 lead after a kill by outside hitter Lauren Westendorf. The Bruins tied the game at 23 after a kill by Brynn Murphy. The game was tied again at 27 and 28 before UCLA scored two straight points and won on a block by Cira Wright. The Bruins edged Oregon in kills (17-13) in the game, but hit .120 to the Ducks' .150.
"I'm very pleased with how we played in the first game," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "We came out and competed with the 13th-ranked team in the nation and we gave ourselves a chance to win. That's what we want. But towards the end of game two and in game three we got away from what was working for us. We need to sustain that level throughout."
In the second game, Oregon outkilled the Bruins 16-14, but UCLA outhit Oregon (.257-.167). Oregon had just six kills in the third game and the Bruins concluded the match with 19 kills and a .325 hitting percentage in the third game.
Brynn Murphy and Lauren Fendrick led UCLA's offense, finishing with 11 and 10 kills, respectively while libero Chrissie Zartman had a match-high 17 digs.
Oregon faces No. 1 USC tomorrow eveing at 7 p.m. at the Lyon Center in Los Angeles.
