Ducks Fall, Earn No. 2 Seed for the Big Ten Tournament
05/03/26 | Softball
LOS ANGELES — A day after securing its 16th Big Ten series win in a row, No. 11 Oregon committed two costly errors that lead to a big second inning for No. 5 UCLA and the Ducks fell to the Bruins 11-3 in five innings Sunday at Easton Stadium.
Â
Despite Sunday's result, Oregon (41-10, 20-4) will be the No. 2 seed for the Big Ten Tournament Thursday at Maryland Softball Stadium in College Park, Md. The Ducks and Bruins finished tied at 20-4 in the Big Ten, but Oregon earned the tiebreaker due to the series win over UCLA.
Â
Elon Butler was a bright spot for the Ducks. She went 2-for-3 and in the process, broke the school single-season record for total bases.
Â
"It's hard to set aside today, but I like where we are at as a team heading into the Big Ten Tournament," said coach Melyssa Lombardi. "I like what were doing offensively; we're scoring a lot of runs and I like our depth and our approach on the mound.
Â
"I think this team is in a really good place."
Â
How It Happened: UCLA (45-7, 20-4) scored in both the first and second innings before the Ducks answered in the third.
Â
Aleena Garcia's two-run home run in the bottom of the first gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead. UCLA then took advantage of two Oregon errors to score six more times in the bottom of the second.
Â
Oregon strung together five hits to score three runs in the top of the third and narrowed UCLA's lead to 8-3.
Â
Katie Flannery and Butler led off with singles. Pinch-runner Presley Lawton came home on Amari Harper's RBI single that dropped in down the left field line. Stefini Ma'ake then drove in Butler with the Ducks's NCAA-leading and school-record 35th sacrifice fly of the season.
Â
With runners at the corners, Rylee McCoy hit a single back up the middle to plate Harper with the Ducks' third run of the inning.
Â
Jordan Woolery hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth for the Bruins that produced the final score.
Â
Notable: Sunday was just the second time Oregon has been run-ruled this season.

Â
Record Book: Elon Butler's first inning single was her 139th total base of the season, breaking the previous program record of 138 by Jenn Salling in 2007. Butler finished the game with 140 total bases on the season. Butler's run in the fourth was her 62nd of the year. That total ranks fourth on the UO single season list and is just three off the school record.
Â
Up Next: Oregon will be the No. 2 seed for the 2026 Big Ten Tournament. The Ducks' first game will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. PT (Big Ten Network) against the winner between seventh-seeded Wisconsin and 10th-seeded Purdue.
