Bats Quiet as Ducks Drop Opener
04/24/26 | Softball
Oregon softball will look to bounce back against Ohio State on Saturday at The Jane.
EUGENE, Ore. — Over the past two seasons, Oregon softball has won 14 straight Big Ten series. For that streak to reach 15, the Ducks have some work to do the rest of the weekend.
Ohio State won its series opener with the No. 12 Ducks on Friday at Jane Sanders Stadium, 3-0, to end a 12-game UO winning streak. Oregon was shut out for just the second time this season, with Ohio State starter Lorin Boutte scattering five hits and not allowing a walk over seven innings.
"I thought she did a good job of getting us to be late on her riseball and just have a lot of fly balls in the air," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "We needed to get to be on time on those and we needed to hit the ball hard on a line."
The Ducks (36-10, 16-3) outhit the Buckeyes, 5-4. But they advanced just two runners into scoring position, and none as far as third base.
"I thought we competed, but I think we needed to make adjustments faster," Lombardi said. "That's where I think we ran into problems. These guys always come out and compete 100 percent; I just think our adjustments needed to be quicker in the game."
Ohio State hit two solo homers and added an unearned run off UO starter Lyndsey Grein (23-5), who struck out 10 to reach double digits for the sixth time this season and the third time in her last five appearances.
"I thought Lindsay battled," Lombardi said. "I thought she gave us an opportunity to win the entire game. That's a tough team. They swing. They've got good power, and we knew that. But I loved the way she competed."
How It Happened: Amari Harper reached on a two-out infield single in the first but was stranded. To lead off the bottom of the second, Stefini Ma'ake hit a drive to the outfield fence and hustled into second, but the momentum of her slide took her past the bag and she was tagged out.Â
Ayanna Shaw singled to lead off the third and Elon Butler reached with one out, but the next two Ducks were retired to end the threat. The Buckeyes broke up Grein's no-hitter in the top of the fourth with a homer for a 1-0 lead.
An unearned run made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth. The Ducks then put two on with one out for the second time in three innings, on singles by Taryn Ho and Katie Flannery, but again they were stranded.
Flannery ended up being the last UO hitter to reach base, as Boutte retired the last eight Ducks in order. The Buckeyes got an insurance run in the sixth on the second homer of the day by Kiki Estrada.
Up Next: The teams meet again Saturday (4 p.m., B1G+).
