Butler, Grein Lead Ducks to Wins at Oregon Classic
02/27/26 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. — Elon Butler drove in eight runs and Lyndsey Grein tossed seven perfect innings over two games as No. 20 Oregon swept a pair of games Friday at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (10-6) opened play in the Oregon Classic with a five-inning, 10-1 win against Stetson and then overcame Idaho State 4-3 in extra innings.
Grein struck out eight in four innings against Stetson and faced the minimum 12 batters before yielding to Rowan Thompson. Grein came back to throw the final three innings against Idaho State and retired all nine batters she faced to improve to 6-3 on the season.
Butler hit a grand slam against Stetson and tied her career-high with six RBIs. The last time Butler drove in six runs also happened at Jane Sanders Stadium against Oregon when she played for California in 2024. In two games Friday, Butler was 5-for-7 with two doubles, a home run and eight RBI. She also scored three runs.
"I've experienced Elon at The Jane crushing it, but on the other side of it," said associate head coach Sam Marder. "She does really well here; I think she had eight RBIs today.
"She's truly a veteran and mature player, and we needed her," said Marder. "She's amazing, and I love that she's on our side of this now. She's a fierce athlete, and believe me, she wants that moment at the end."

How It Happened – Game 1: Lyndsey Grein was perfect through four innings and Elon Butler drove in a career-high tying six runs in Oregon's run-rule victory.
A week after defeating two top-25 SEC teams at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, Grein threw four perfect innings against Stetson (13-4). After the leadoff hitter popped up to first, Grein struck out eight Hatter batters in a row. In her last inning of work, Grein retired the side in order on two fly outs and a ground out.
In the bottom of the first inning, Kaylynn Jones led off with a walk and went to second when Ayanna Shaw lined a single off the pitcher. Elon Butler then brought both runners home with a double to the wall in left center.
Butler moved to third on a wild pitch and then stole home for a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Her day was just getting started.
With one out in the second inning, Katie Flannery and Jones walked. Shaw reached on a fielder's choice before Amari Harper walked to load the bases. Butler then lined a homer just over the wall in left center for her first grand slam as a Duck.
The Ducks added two more runs in the third on Addison Amaral's first home run in an Oregon uniform. Freshman Taryn Ho got her first hit at Jane Sanders Stadium, a single into left, before Amaral launched one high off the netting in left center for a 9-0 lead.
"I'm so happy for Addison," said Marder. "I mean, that's a player you know has had to battle early things this season that maybe she hasn't before in her career, and that speaks to her toughness and to her character.
"She's been working really hard, and so it's one of those things where you see her hit that home run, and as a coach, you're just so happy for her because she's been needing that to get her going."
Oregon scored once more in the bottom of the fourth. With Shaw on third, Braiesey Rosa came through with a two-out RBI single back up the middle to plate Oregon's final run of the game.
How It Happened – Game 2: Oregon rallied to tie the game twice before winning in extra innings.
Idaho State (8-8) took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run in the top of the second inning.
The Ducks tied the game at 2-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings.
In the third inning, Kaylynn Jones and Ayanna Shaw singled and advanced a base on a groundout.
Elon Butler hit a line drive off the pitcher to bring Jones home with Oregon's first run.
In the fourth inning, Taryn Ho hit a one-out triple to right center. She tagged and scored on an Emma Cox fly out to right field to tie the game, 2-2.
The Bengals regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Kira Day led off with a double and pinch-hitter Jade Moore's double scored Day for a 3-2 lead.
Oregon squared things up again in the bottom of the sixth.
Butler led off with a double and Stefini Ma'ake was hit by a pitch. Ho then sacrificed both runners ahead a base.
Cox tied the game, 3-3, with a grounder to the right side that scored Butler.

Lyndsey Grein relieved in the sixth and threw three perfect innings, striking out six, to help send the game into extra innings.
It didn't take long for the Ducks to claim their second eight-inning win in the last three games.
In the bottom of the eighth, with a runner placed on second using the international tie-breaker for tournament play, Butler led off laced a double into left field as the Ducks scored the winning run on Butler's eighth RBI of the day.
"My first thought was 'We're winning this game.' I had no doubt in myself or in my teammates that we were going to win this game," said Butler. "Even if I were to end up getting out, I knew the people behind me had my back."
Notable: The Stetson victory was Oregon's 150th all-time at Jane Sanders Stadium … Ayanna Shaw went 2-for-3 and scored three runs against Idaho State … Amanda Urbina made her first appearance as a Duck when she pinch hit in the seventh inning against Idaho State.
