Ducks’ Comeback Bid Spoiled at Indiana
02/22/26 | Women's Basketball
Etute posts career-high 27 points, 17 rebounds.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite a career-high 27 points and 17 rebounds from forward Ehis Etute, the Oregon women's basketball team was unable to put together another double-digit comeback effort in a 72-65 loss at Indiana on Sunday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
The Ducks (19-9, 7-9) trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but cut the deficit to nine points at halftime after Katie Fiso's buzzer-beating jumper. Oregon chipped away and claimed its first lead of the day with under 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter, and later led by two early in the fourth, but Indiana hit on 4-of-5 3-point tries in the final frame to thwart the comeback bid.
"We dug ourselves a big hole," said head coach Kelly Graves. "In true Duck fashion, we continued to chip away and when we took the lead I thought we had a couple opportunities, and then some ill-advised shots, some turnovers.
"In the end, we just didn't make enough baskets or make key stops when we needed to."
Etute became the first player in the Big Ten this season, and just the 10th player in the nation, with a 27-point, 17-rebound effort. The double-double was her sixth of the season, while she has surpassed 20 points in consecutive games for the second time this season.
Fiso added 15 points and tied her career high with nine boards, and senior guard Astera Tuhina added 14 points off the bench – her first game in double figures since Nov. 27 – and accounted for two of Oregon's three 3-pointers on the day.
How It Happened: Oregon trailed 8-0 before its first basket of the day, a pull-up jumper from Fiso nearly three minutes into the game. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 13-4 lead as the game hit the first media timeout, with all four points coming from Fiso as the Ducks started the game 2-for-8 from the floor. Fiso accounted for eight of UO's 10 points in the quarter, including four during a 6-0 run to trim the lead to three points, but trailed after the first, 17-10
A 7-0 IU run over a 45-second stretch early in the second quarter pushed the Ducks' deficit to 12 points, 24-12. Oregon would trail by as many as 15 in the quarter, but the Ducks rallied to score six of the final eight points before halftime to trail by nine, 37-28, at the break.
Etute tallied a game-high 12 points to go with six boards in the first half, with Fiso adding 11 points and four rebounds. The sophomore duo accounted for 23 of UO's 28 first-half points, going a combined 10-of-19 from the floor. Tuhina was the only other Duck to get into the scoring column in the half, scoring five points and hitting her team's lone triple of the half.
Oregon's defense held Indiana without a field goal in the third quarter as the Hoosiers went 0-for-12 from the field, but went 7-for-10 from the free throw line. The Ducks won the quarter 15-7 and took their first lead of the game on a Tuhina 3-pointer with 1:27 left in the frame to cap a six-point spurt. UO put together an 11-3 run over a five-minute span to chip away at IU's lead, but trailed 44-43 going into the fourth after a pair of Indiana free throws with under a second on the clock.
An early 3-pointer from Sofia Bell followed by a pull-up jumper from Tuhina handed the Ducks a 48-46 lead less than 90 seconds into the fourth quarter. Indiana responded by scoring the next five to reclaim a three-point lead. A 6-0 Oregon run stole back the lead at 57-56 with 3:36 to play, but that proved to be the final time the Ducks would hold the lead.
The Hoosiers scored the next eight points, knocking down two triples, as part of a 12-4 run to give IU a seven-point advantage. Indiana went 10-for-13 from the floor while four of its seven made 3-pointers came in the fourth quarter.
