Ducks Win Two of Three on Opening Day

Oregon beat Texas A&M-CC and Spring Hill Friday at the Green Wave Invitational.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Oregon beach volleyball team opened its season with two wins Friday at the Green Wave Invitational hosted by Tulane. The Ducks got victories over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Spring Hill College before falling to 12th-ranked LSU in the day's finale.
Oregon closes out its season-opening weekend Saturday with duals against No. 20 Tulane at 6:30 a.m. PT and New Orleans at 9 a.m.
Match 1: Oregon 3, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2
With the season-opening dual tied at 2-2, the duo of Gwen Fife and AJ Slojkowski secured the win with a 21-12, 14-21, 15-11 decision at No. 3 pairs. The score was tied 6-all in the decisive third set when the UO pair rattled off six of the next eight points to create separation on the scoreboard. The win also doubled as the first for first-year head coach Kristian Kuld.
The Ducks' first point of the season came from No. 4 pair Hanna Bjornson and Sofia Taylor in a win that tied the dual at 1-1. From down match point at the fifth spot, Natasha George and Katrena Koellner had a three-set win—19-21, 21-17, 17-15—that once again tied the score to force the winner-take-all point.
The result at No. 5 pairs marked the first-career win for Koellner who was also making her debut in the top-five lineup.

The Ducks posted their second win of the day with a sweep of Spring Hill College without dropping a set. Bjornson and Taylor were the first pair off the court followed by the team's second point at No. 2s from Daley McClellan and Elsa Snipes. It was career win No. 25 for McClellan while Snipes tallied the first win of her Oregon career.
Fife and Slojkowski, once again, sealed the victory for Oregon with a 21-13, 21-12 result at No. 3 pairs. With the result in hand, the Ducks completed the 5-0 scoreline with wins from Bella Gamache and Liz Rossi at the top of the lineup and Landree Coats and Josie Griffiths in the No. 5 spot. The wins marked career win No. 20 for both Gamache and Coats, and the first for Griffiths.

Bjornson and Taylor picked up the Ducks' lone set win of the finale against 12th-ranked LSU. The No. 4s pair dropped the first but rallied in the second set but the Tigers' duo of Isabella Lagemann and Zayna Meyer responded for the 21-16, 19-21, 15-7 win.
Friday was the first meeting between Oregon and LSU since 2014, the first year of the UO program.
