Ducks Fall in Exhibition Opener
10/15/26 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon fell 71-65 to Seattle U in an exhibition contest Thursday night at Matthew Knight Arena, opening the 2026-27 season with Tony Stubblefield's first game as the Ducks' interim head coach.
The Ducks led by as many as 13 points in the second half but were unable to hold off a Seattle U rally, as turnovers and missed opportunities proved costly in the exhibition matchup.
Pharaoh Compton led Oregon with 15 points, going 4-of-4 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Andrew Meadow added 12 points, while Taylor Bol Bowen finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Dwayne Aristode contributed eight points and six rebounds.
"We got a lot of things that we have to clean up, but that is what these exhibition games are for, trying different combinations and experimenting with some things," interim head coach Tony Stubblefield said. "But you know, you're not going to give yourself a chance to win many basketball games if you turn the basketball over 25 times, and another team gets 16 more attempts at the rim than what you do, so we got a lot of work we have to do."
How it happened: Oregon opened the game with a 5-0 lead before Seattle U answered, eventually building a seven-point advantage at 12-5. The Ducks responded with a run of their own, using contributions from Compton, Meadow and Jasper Johnson to work back into the contest. Oregon regained the lead late in the first half, with a 3-pointer from Wei Lin and a fast-break triple from Fred Payne helping the Ducks build a 33-27 advantage. Bol Bowen added an alley-oop finish in the closing minute, and Oregon took a 36-35 lead into halftime.
The Ducks carried that momentum into the second half, with Tyrone Riley IV scoring on a driving finish to open the period. Compton added a second-chance basket, and Oregon began to create separation. Meadow converted a pair of free throws before hitting a transition 3-pointer off a Compton steal to push the lead to 45-36.
Oregon continued to build its advantage behind Aristode, who connected on consecutive 3-pointers, and a dunk from Sean Stewart. Aristode's second triple gave the Ducks a 53-40 lead with 14:08 remaining.
Seattle U answered with a sustained rally, cutting the deficit to single digits with a series of baskets in the paint and a 3-pointer from Mason Williams. Compton briefly steadied Oregon with a second-chance layup and free throw to make it 56-48, but the Redhawks continued to chip away. Three-pointers from Ray Adams and Jaden Bailes helped Seattle U take a 57-56 lead, its first since the opening half.
The Redhawks extended their run to take a 59-56 advantage before Oregon fought back. Lin converted two free throws, and the Ducks remained within striking distance, but Seattle U answered with consecutive 3-pointers from Williams and Tyler Boston to stretch its lead to 67-58 with 4:42 remaining.
Oregon made one final push. Bol Bowen scored in transition off a Riley steal, then knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:06 remaining to cut the deficit to 67-65. Seattle U converted four free throws in the closing seconds, however, to secure the six-point victory.
Oregon finished 20-of-48 from the field and 7-of-21 from 3-point range. Seattle U shot 35.8% overall but attempted 19 more field goals than the Ducks and scored 34 points in the paint. Oregon committed 25 turnovers, compared with 12 for the Redhawks.
