
Top-Five Individual Finishes Highlight XC Openers

The Ducks return to action Sept. 26 for the Cowboy Jamboree and Gans Creek Classic.
EUGENE, Ore. – Sergio Del Barrio led a trio of top-15 finishes Friday morning at the Mizzou Opener in Columbia, Mo., while Ella Thorsett and Katie Clute paced the Oregon women at the UVU Invitational in Orem, Utah.
Del Barrio was the first Duck across the finish line and finished third overall at the Gans Creek Course, not only the site of Friday's season opener but also the NCAA Championships in November. Del Barrio navigated the 5K course in 14:54 followed by Jack Meier (15:14.7) and Will Heslam (15:16) in 12th and 14th place, respectively.
It was the cross debut for all three including Meier's first competition in an Oregon kit.
Crossing the line together, Thorsett (17:22.64) and Clute (17:22.66) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's opener at Scera Park. They were joined in the top 20 by Liliana Hudnut in her debut in the Oregon lineup. The redshirt freshman clocked in at 18:15 to finished in 19th place overall.
Thorsett and Clute are coming off track seasons where they qualified for the NCAA West First Round meet in the 1500 meters and steeplechase, respectively.

It will be their first glance at the national course. The Ducks are back on their home course Oct. 10 for the Bill Dellinger Invitational.
