Men of Oregon Win Big Ten Title
05/18/25 | Track and Field
The Ducks won the indoor and outdoor Big Ten team titles.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Men of Oregon won the 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field team title Sunday at Hayward Field, scoring in 13 of 21 events on its way to 110 points. With the weekend result, the UO men completed a sweep of the conference indoor and outdoor championships. Simeon Birnbaum capped the weekend with an individual victory at 5,000 meters.
On the women's side, the Ducks won four titles Sunday and finished as the conference runner-up by just eight points behind top-ranked USC. Klaudia Kazimierska won the 800 meters, Silan Ayyildiz and Aaliyah McCormick completed their indoor-outdoor double at 5,000 meters and in the 100 hurdles, respectively, and Ryann Porter took the top spot in the triple jump.
In victory, the Oregon men recorded their 23rd outdoor conference title and first under head coach Jerry Schumacher. The Ducks took down a Big Ten field that featured five top-20 teams.
"I think you could see (their hunger) in every event that they contested—that they were fighting every step of the way," Schumacher said. "Nothing was given away easy by the men's team. They didn't give anything away and I think a team that can do that for every event is hard to beat."

After a third-place finish earlier in the day at 1500 meters, Birnbaum was back on the track to run the 5,000 meters. He responded with his first Big Ten title in meet-record fashion, stopping the clock in a time of 13:31.87 to replace the previous mark of 13:41.06 run by Wisconsin's Mohammed Ahmed in 2012.
Birnbaum is the seventh UO man to win a conference title at 5,000 meters and the first to do so since Cole Hocker in 2021.
"I got out-kicked in that 1500, and that got me fired up and ready to go for this race," Birnbaum said. "When I was getting ready for the 5K, I look at our team score and saw we were doing pretty well. On paper, we weren't supposed to be ahead—we were ranked around seventh among the teams. I knew I could put us ahead with this race, so I told myself 'I'm going to go out there and win and ice this meet for us.'"
The win was the second of the weekend for the Oregon men, coupled with Benjamin Balazs' victory in the steeplechase Saturday evening. The Ducks scored double-digit points in three events this weekend: Friday's 10,000 meters (23), Saturday's 3,000-meter steeplechase (16) and Sunday's 5,000 (12).
Oregon also got the benefit of runner-up finishes from Matthew Erickson and Safin Wills in the 800 and triple jump, respectively. Erickson and eventual champion Allon Clay of Penn State battled to the finish, separated by just .001—both were given times of 1:47.93—across the line with Clay getting the narrow edge.
Ayyildiz pulled away over the final 100 meters for the 5,000-meter victory, crossing in 15:37.11 and a new meet record. It was her second race of the day after leading a 2-3 finish for the UO women along side teammate Mia Barnett in the 1500 meters.
Porter led a 1-2 finish in the triple jump with freshman teammate Cassie Atkins, both with lifetime bests. The duo now ranks fourth and sixth, respectively, in UO history. Atkins qualified out of the first flight and came away with a nearly two-foot season best.
