Ducks Wait Out Rain Delay to Defeat Hoosiers
04/25/25 | Softball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — No. 5 Oregon overcame a rain delay of nearly three hours, as well as an Indiana team looking to bolster its NCAA Tournament resume, by defeating the Hoosiers 10-4 in the opening game of the series Friday night at Andy Mohr Field.
The Ducks came-from-behind after trailing 3-0 early to open up 1.5 game lead over idle UCLA in the Big Ten title race. Oregon improved to 42-5 overall and 15-2 in the Big Ten Conference.
Indiana (30-14, 8-9) came into the night sitting squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble with an RPI in the 40s and led 3-2 after two innings before the game was halted due to heavy rain and lightning in the area.
Once the game resumed the Ducks scored five runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take the lead and pull away.
How It Happened: Indiana only got one hit in the first inning but they made it count. After two Hoosiers walked, Ally VanBrandt hit a three-run home run to right field.
The Ducks used small ball to chip away at Indiana's lead in the top of the second.
Kaylynn Jones and Braiesey Rosa walked with one out. Katie Flannery beat out an infield single deep into the hole at short to load the bases.
Jones then raced home on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 Hoosiers.
Kai Luschar followed with a chopper over third that brought Rosa home. Flannery was thrown out on the play, but the Ducks closed to within 3-2.
Lyndsey Grein backed up the offense by striking out the side in the bottom of the second. She had four strikeouts through the first two innings and finished with seven in 4.1 innings to pick up her NCAA-leading 26th win of the season.
One out into the third inning, the game was delayed for two hours and 58 minutes by lightning and heavy rain.
When the game resumed, the Ducks put five runs on the board in the top of the third on one hit, five walks, two hit batters and a wild pitch to take a 7-3 lead.
Emma Cox, Dezianna Patmon and Rosa walked to load the bases. With one out, Flannery drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3.
Kai Luschar then beat out an infield single that scored Jones to give the Ducks a 4-3 advantage,
Rylee McCoy picked up an RBI the hard way – getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. That gave Oregon a 5-3 lead.
Flannery then came home on a wild pitch as the Ducks' lead increased to 6-3.
Kedre Luschar was hit by a pitch to reload the bases before Paige Sinicki walked to force in Oregon's seventh run of the game.
More chaos ensued in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and second, Kai Luschar dropped a bunt single down the third base line. The throw to try to get her at first went into right field, which allowed Jones and Rosa to score.
Oregon led 9-3 before the Hoosiers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Ducks added one more run in the sixth inning. Patmon led the inning off with just the second triple of her career. She scored Oregon's 10th run of the night on Jones' RBI single into center.
Notable: Sinicki made her 200th career start at shortstop … It was also her 176th straight start at short … Kai Luschar was 3-for-4 on the night and drove in two runs … Jones had two hits on Friday … Oregon batters walked a season-high 11 times, two shy of the school record.
Up Next: The Ducks and Indiana will play the second game of the series Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time (B1G+).
