Loss to UCLA Sets Up Game to Decide Series Sunday
04/19/25 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 5 Oregon dropped the middle game of its three-game series with No. 6 UCLA, 8-0, Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,571 at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (40-5, 13-2) won Friday's series opener, 3-1, meaning the winner of Sunday's game will win the season series and will take a one-game lead for first place in the Big Ten Conference into the final two weeks of the season.
The Bruins (40-6, 12-2) scored twice in the third and six times in the sixth.
"Today we didn't manage how we normally handle ourselves," said coach Melyssa Lombardi. "I don't think we played well enough today. It took us too long to try and make adjustments on the plate."
How It Happened: Oregon used Friday night's winner, Lyndsey Grein, in a opener role. She struck out two of the three batters she faced in a perfect first inning.
Staci Chambers started the second inning for a lefty-lefty matchup with the NCAA's home run and RBI leader Megan Grant. Chambers got Grant to foul out to catcher Emma Cox and recorded a fly out before giving way to Elise Sokolsky who got the last out of the second.
UCLA touched up Sokolsky for two unearned runs in the third inning, aided by an error and two wild pitches. Sokolsky suffered just her second loss of the season in falling to 11-2.
The Ducks kept it a two-run game until the sixth, when the Bruins scored six times, capped by a three-run home run by Kaniya Bragg.
"I liked some of the pitching hand offs we did but as we got deeper into the game, we were not commanding the zone and working ahead," said Lombardi. "We were working behind and then let too many big hits happen."
Oregon managed just three hits against UCLA's Addisen Fisher, singles by Kai Luschar, Kedre Luschar and Dezianna Patmon, none of which came in the same inning.

Notable: Saturday was Oregon's Bark in the Park game and many furry family members were in attendance including UOPD's Thor ... Grein has yet to allow a run to a top 25 team this season in 23.0 innings pitched … She needs just three more strikeouts for number 400 in her career … Paige Sinicki started her 173rd consecutive game at shortstop … Even with the loss, the Ducks' 40-5 record is tied for the best in program history … Both Kai Luschar and Kedre Luschar stole a base on Saturday … Already the UO season record-holder, Kai Luschar's steal was her 46th of the season, which ties her for fourth place on the Big Ten's single-season list with Susan Harrelson of Northwestern (1995) … The two steals brought Oregon's school record total to 141, tying the 2019 Indiana team for fifth on the Big Ten season list.

Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi on the pitching strategy going into the game
"It was the strategy we were going with today. We felt that everybody needed to take strain, and I liked it, I would do it again. We didn't get the outcome I wanted, but I would do it again."
Up Next: The series wraps up Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Jane (B1G+).
