Ducks Shut Out San Diego, Loyola Chicago
03/01/25 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – Pitching was front and center for No. 14 Oregon Saturday at the Oregon Classic as the Ducks shut out San Diego, 6-0, and Loyola Chicago, 8-0, in front of 1,753 fans at Jane Sanders Stadium.
"I think we have a whole staff that can shut out teams do that," said associate head coach Sam Marder. "It was great to see them put those zeros up today. I think it gives them a ton of confidence, and I know the other pitchers are waiting to go do the same thing."
Winning pitchers Lyndsey Grein and Elise Sokolsky both recorded their 300th career strikeouts on Saturday.
Grein struck out 12 in a complete game against San Diego to open the day and win her NCAA-leading 11th game of the season against no defeats. Sokolsky followed that with a six-inning blanking of the Ramblers in the nightcap.
"We are doing it for them," said Dezianna Patmon, who homered against the Toreros and drove in the game-ending run versus Loyola Chicago. "We always talk about as hitter that the pitchers are doing their job and it's time for us to do our job. I trust them 100 percent. Our job is to back them up, so they don't have to put in as much work."
Oregon (19-1) saw its winning streak reach 14 games, the program's longest since winning 14 in a row in 2021, even with the absence of head coach Melyssa Lombardi, who is away from the team for the weekend attending to a personal matter.
How It Happened (Game 1) — Oregon 6, San Diego 0: Grein struck out six of the first eight batters she faced and struck out the side in the second inning. She had two more strikeouts in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Grein allowed three hits, walked one, and only one USD runner advanced beyond first base. It was her first shutout as a Duck and the fourth of her career.
"We just thought she would be a great matchup for San Diego, and it was good to see her go the distance," said Marder. "Our pitchers have been doing a great job of coming in for relief and picking up innings, and we need to be able to do that as we get into conference. I was really proud of her."
Oregon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Paige Sinicki hit the first of the Ducks' three homers in the game. Kedre Luschar and Katie Flannery followed with back-to-back doubles, the second of which scored Luschar.
Rylee McCoy hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
Luschar helped Oregon manufacture a run in the fourth inning. She walked and stole second, and advanced to third when the throw from the catcher got away from second base. She came home on Flannery's sacrifice fly.
The Ducks tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Patmon belted a one-out homer to left field. It was her fifth of the season and second of the weekend.
"It was great," said Patmon. "I have been wanting to hit a home run at The Jane, waiting for that home opener. It was awesome, rounding third and having everyone at home plate. it's awesome to be able to run into your teammate's arms after that."
McCoy continued the inning with a double before Sinicki's two-out double brought home Oregon's sixth and final run of the game.
McCoy and Sinicki both had two hits against the Toreros, while Sinicki and Flannery had two RBI.
How It Happened (Game 2) — Oregon 8, Loyola Chicago 0: Sokolsky held the Ramblers to three hits while striking out six.
She kept Loyola at bay for most of the game and rose to the challenge in the fifth inning when the Ramblers threatened to score with a runner at third. Riley Owens led the top of the inning off with a walk and stole second with two outs. She then moved down to third on a wild pitch. But Sokolsky got Addyson Borg to fly out to Luschar in center to end the inning.
"We are still early in the season, so we are working through stuff just like every other person," said Sokolsky. "Being able to have an offense and defense like the one we have takes the pressure off me."
The offense staked Sokolsky to a four-run lead in the first inning.
Kai Luschar led off with an infield single and stole second. Patmon walked before the two runners pulled off a double steal. Kai Luschar scored on the play after the throw from the catcher went into left field. McCoy's sacrifice fly brought Patmon home for a 2-0 lead.
Sinicki started things up again with a bunt single and stole second. Kedre Luschar plated Sinicki with a single through the right side.
Kedre Luschar then stole second and advanced to third on the Ramblers' second error of the inning. Flannery's RBI single gave the Ducks a 4-0 lead.
Flannery and Kedre Luschar, who were both 2-for-3 in game two, teamed up for another run in the third that was scored in the identical fashion as their first one. Kedre Luschar singled into left center. She stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Another Flannery single gave Oregon a 5-0 edge.
Stefini Ma'ake's two-run home run in the fifth pushed the Ducks closer to a run-rule victory. It was her eighth home run of the season.
Patmon's two-out double in the bottom of the sixth finished the game. Remmington Hewitt doubled down the left field line. On the first pitch she saw, Patmon drilled a line drive into the gap in left center to plate Hewitt.
Notable: The Ducks' 19-1 start is the program's best since going 24-1 to open the 2021 season … With eight steals on Saturday, Oregon's season total stands at 78, one behind USC Upstate for the NCAA lead. With two steals Saturday, Kai Luschar moved within two steals of third place on the UO career list. She's currently in sixth with 70. Directly in front of her are Neena Bryant (2007-10) and Suzie Barbes (2004-07) in fourth with 71 and Kim Manning (1989-92) in third with 72 … Paige Sinicki made her 148th and 149th consecutive starts at shortstop … Regan Legg entered both games as a pinch runner and scored twice; Saturday was her birthday.

"We have a great pitching staff. We have a dominant defense, and they really showed that throughout the weekend. We're maybe a third of the way through the season now, and there have been so many highlights. The preseason before conference can be grueling; you're playing a ton of games traveling. I think what this team is showing us is that we could win by being dominant offensively or we could win being dominant in the circle."
Pitcher Elise Sokolsky on Oregon's 19-1 start
"I remember before we even started practicing, our entire team was on the field, and it was electric. I knew from there we had something special, but I didn't know how special it was going to be. Now you guys can see the full effect."
Up Next: Oregon closes out the first home weekend with a rematch against Loyola Chicago at 1 p.m. Sunday (B1G+).
