Oregon extended its winning streak to nine in front of 3,847 fans at Matthew Knight Arena.
EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 11 Oregon volleyball team hit .315 and registered 12.0 total blocks to sweep Illinois (25-21, 25-22, 25-13) in Friday's Big Ten opener. Mimi Colyer put down a team-high 12 kills while Onye Ofoegbu and Michelle Ohwobete each had seven kills against the Fighting Illini. With the straight-set result, Oregon extended its winning streak to nine.
Defensively, Ofoegbu added a match-leading six blocks and fellow senior Daley McClellan had 12 digs. The Ducks held Illinois (8-3, 0-1) to a season-low .099 hitting percentage, the sixth time in 10 matches holding their opponent under a .100 efficiency.
Redshirt freshman Cristin Cline dished out 30 assists to go along with six digs, five kills and two blocks. She and junior middle each had five kills without committing an error, Cline on seven attempts while Neal was clean on seven swings.
How It Happened: With the score tied at 14-all in the opening set, Oregon (9-1, 1-0) made a definitive four-point push; Ohwobete had two kills during the run. Colyer notched her fifth kill of the first to give the home team a handful of set points at 24-17. The Fighting Illini rattled off the next four but out of a timeout by the Ducks, the visitors sent a serve into the net to give UO the 1-0 match lead.
The first set featured 12 ties and five lead changes.
Trailing throughout the first half of the second, Illinois put together a 6-0 surge to turn a 15-13 deficit into a 19-15 advantage. The Illini's Raina Terry contributed two aces and a kill during the push. Oregon responded to pull even at 20-all after an Ohwobete kill. The score was seemingly tied at 22-all before a successful challenge by Ulmer to overturn a touch called on the Ducks.
Oregon scored 10 of the last 13 points in the second set, once again clinching the game with a service error by Illinois. Terry finished the match with a match-high 16 kills and four aces.
Behind strong serving pressure from McClellan and Mackenzie Morris, the Ducks sprinted out to a 7-1 lead and kept a cushion of at least five the rest of the way. The advantage ballooned to ten at 18-8 on the penultimate kill of the night for Colyer. On its second match point, Oregon got a kill from Ofoegbu on a slide.
Up Next: The Ducks host Indiana on Saturday (5:30 p.m., BTN) as the team's Stomp Out Cancer match. As part of the activities surrounding the match, there will be a blood drive set up outside of Matthew Knight Arena and the Ford Alumni Center in conjunction with Bloodworks Northwest.
