Top-10 UO Times at Mt. SAC, Oregon Relays
04/20/24 | Track and Field
Aaliyah McCormick (100H) moved into a tie for the No. 2 performer in program history.
EUGENE, Ore. – Aaliyah McCormick and Silan Ayyildiz posted top-10 program performances Saturday, highlighting the team's final day of competition at the Mt. SAC and Oregon Relays. The Ducks notched four runner-up performances—all behind professional athletes—and combined for eight lifetime and season bests between the two meets.
McCormick took down her lifetime best with Saturday's 12.81 performance in the invitational section, tying the No. 2 time in program history. She was the top collegian in the Mt. SAC field and was second overall. Based on times entering the weekend, McCormick moves to fifth on the national list this year.
In Eugene, Ayyildiz ran a personal best of 4:10.52 in the pro section of the 1500 meters at the Oregon Relays. The time puts her ninth on the UO top-10 list, just one week removed from running the No. 2 time in program history at 5,000 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Teammate and Eugene native Maddy Elmore ran 4:11.03 and the UO pair finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Also at the Oregon Relays, Elliott Cook was runner-up in the 800 in 1:47.01, a new outdoor best. Cook was second to 2023 world champion—at 1500 meters—Josh Kerr who ran 1:45.94 for the win. In fifth overall, redshirt freshman Rheinhardt Harrison clocked in at 1:48.28, a lifetime best of his own.
The women got the Ducks' day started with a season-best time of 43.63 in the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet of Lily Jones, Jadyn Mays, Shana Grebo and Alexa Rossum combined to finish fifth overall, and second among collegiate teams. Saturday's effort knocked more than a second off the relay's previous season best of 44.82 from the Brutus Hamilton Invitational two weeks ago.
Individually, Mays added top-collegian efforts in the 100 and 200 meters. She posted a season best of 11.19 (-0.4) to finish second overall in the 100 and crossed in 22.94 at 200 meters, good for fifth in the loaded pro field. Mays was just off her wind-legal best of 11.16 in the shorter sprint.
The San Diego native is now tied with Sasha Wallace on the program's all-time list. McCormick ran her previous best of 12.85 during last year's Pac-12 Championships, also at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Alysah Hickey, in her 2024 debut, was the top collegian and runner-up overall in the long jump. On her first attempt of the afternoon, she got out to 6.43m/21-1.25 which led through two rounds and stood up to the field for second at day's end. Saturday was Hickey's first competition since last year's NCAA Championships in Austin where she finished fourth.
In the men's lone event of the day at Mt. SAC, the sprint duo of PJ Ize-Iyamu and Rodrick Pleasant had top-15 finishes in the 100 meters. Ize-Iyamu clocked a season-best time of 10.30 while Pleasant, in his opener, ran 10.38 in section two of three. Ize-Iyamu was fifth among collegians, good for 11th overall.
After relay duties earlier in the afternoon, Grebo was back on the track for her first 400-meter hurdles race of the season. She navigated the tight turns of lane two to clock a time of 56.71 and finish fourth. Grebo is the school-record holder at 56.28 and is the reigning Pac-12 champion in the event.
Tomas Palfrey, the final Duck in competition Saturday, ran a personal best of 4:02.16 in the pro mile at Oregon Relays. He finished eighth in the race. The UO sophomore carried a mile best of 4:04.42, a time from this past December at the team's indoor opener in Boston.
Up Next: In the penultimate weekend of the regular season, Oregon will send entries to multiple meets next week. The scheduled events include the OSU High Performance in Corvallis, Payton Jordan Invite at Stanford, the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz., and a small group to Drake and Penn Relays. The next home meet is May 3 when the Ducks host the Oregon Twilight at Hayward Field.
