Hansen, Homers Help Ducks Complete Sweep
03/24/24 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 22 Oregon hit three home runs and Stevie Hansen threw six shutout innings as the Ducks completed the sweep of Arizona State with a 5-0 win Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The sweep – and third straight series win – moved Oregon into sole possession of second place in the Pac-12 at 7-2 (19-10 overall).
Ariel Carlson and Vallery Wong homered in the first inning for the Ducks, while Emma Kauf added one in the fifth.
That was more than enough for Hansen, who improved to 3-4 on the season. She gave up just three hits, struck out two and walked two. She stranded runners on base in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings and also saw the defense turn a double play behind her in the fourth inning.
"I think today was a good day for me, but it was really helpful having a good defense out there," said Hansen. "I think having them behind me and knowing they're always going to have my back gives me a lot of confidence."

After a 39-minute rain delay in the bottom of the sixth inning, Morgan Scott finished the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to complete the Ducks' sixth shutout of the season.
"These guys came in and they had their mindset to get the sweep," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. "We clinched the series yesterday, but they wanted to get the sweep.
"To see Stevie set the tone and get out of that first inning with them stranding a runner and then to come up and hit two bombs, score three runs, I think they did a great job of setting the tone," said Lombardi. "Our defense was really good all weekend."

How it Happened: Oregon got all the offense they would need with two home runs in the first inning.
Hanna Delgado drew a walk to lead off the game. One out later, Carlson launched a ball high down the left field line that stayed just fair for her ninth home run of the season. With two outs in the first, Vallery Wong hit a drive that also hugged the left field line before hitting the foul pole for her fourth homer of the year.
"In the first two games, we fell behind early, so this game we wanted to come out strong and shut them down in the first inning and then come get some run support," said Carlson. "That's what we did. It always feels good when you speak it into existence and then it happens."
Wong also factored in Oregon's third run of the game. Alyssa Daniel reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second when Kai Luschar was caught in a rundown between third and home. Daniell then stole third base – her first steal of the year – before Wong slapped a two-out single through the left side to score her.

Kauf led off the bottom of the sixth inning with her second home run of the year for a 5-0 Oregon lead.
"That was big," said Lombardi. "We needed that extra run, that was really big. For her to go opposite was pretty clutch. I think she's a hitting machine."
Carlson went 3-for-3 and was a triple shy of a cycle on Sunday. Wong was 2-for-3. Both players drove in two runs.

"It's exciting. We've seen that we can get the second game and the third. Now it's just exciting that we can get all three and push the momentum forward into the following Pac series and the Fullerton game."
Coach Lombardi on four games next week
"I think our team has been really caught up on what is in front of us, and right now, Fullerton is in front of us. We want to get through Fullerton and then we'll look to UCLA."
Noteworthy: Oregon has won six straight against ASU for the first time since 2017-18 … Carlson is the only player in the Pac-12 with nine-plus home runs and nine-plus stolen bases … Scott had a win and two saves last season versus ASU and had a win and one save in 2024 … Sunday was Oregon's Bark in the Park game and some 20 dogs were in attendance in addition to 1,589 human fans.
On Deck: Oregon will play at Cal State Fullerton Tuesday (6 p.m., ESPN+) before moving to Westwood for a three-game series at UCLA that begins Thursday. All three games will be on the Pac-12 Networks.
