Ducks Add Eight Wins to Weekend Total
03/23/24 | Track and Field
Oregon is off to the Stanford Invitational (March 29-30) next weekend.
EUGENE, Ore. – Elliott Cook was a double winner Saturday at the Oregon Preview, two of the Ducks' eight wins between the home meet in Eugene and SDSU Aztec Invitational. Cook swept the 800 and 1500 meters on day two of the home opener while Jadyn Mays and Aaliyah McCormick posted wins over 100 meters and in the 100 hurdles, respectively.
Eugene native Taylor Chocek posted two wins, as well, with her top-10 program showing in the 100-meter hurdles and as a member of the 4x400 relay. The Ducks' list of winners also featured Arthur Katahdin in the pole vault and Jaida Ross in the discus.
Cook, in his first race since an indoor mile in early December, led a 1-2-3 finish for the UO men in the 1500 meters. He stopped the clock in 3:42.85, an early NCAA lead, and followed by Simeon Birnbaum (3:45.27) and Matthew Erickson (3:45.38). It was Birnbaum's first race in an Oregon kit while Erickson posted a lifetime best in the event.
The Ducks put four in the top five and five in the top seven of Saturday's race. Just over an hour later, Cook was back on the track to post a winning time of 1:50.49 in the 800 meters.
In San Diego, McCormick was the Ducks' first winner of the day with her season-opening 13.03 in the 100-meter hurdles. She out-leaned fellow Pac-12 hurdler Jada Hicks (13.06) of Cal for the victory with 2008 Olympian (400H) Queen Harrison Claye in third. The UO standout ran 13.23 at the Aztec meet a season ago. The +2.2 wind Saturday negated a would-be meet record for McCormick.
Chocek, in early season prep for the heptathlon, won the 100-meter hurdles in Eugene with a time of 13.59, a new lifetime best and the No. 10 time in program history. She added a second personal best with a runner-up finish (24.63) at 200 meters. In the final event of the weekend, Chocek teamed with Madyson Kannon and fellow multis Gianna Bullock and Colleen Uzoekwe for victory in the 4x400.
Battling a steady rain at the Aztec Invitational, Mays clocked a time of 11.26 (+2.3) to open her season with a victory in the 100 meters. She was nearly three-tenths faster than the runner-up. Mays was the winner at the SDSU meet last season, as well. Based on times entering the day, Mays is tied for fifth in the NCAA through the first two weeks of the outdoor season.
Ross and Shelby Moran went 1-2 in the discus at the Oregon Preview. Moran took the early lead with a 51.67m/169-6 in the second round but Ross answered with a 54.62m/179-2 effort on her third attempt. The Medford, Ore., native extended her lead with a 55.27m/181-4, a day's best, in the fifth round.
The top four in the men's pole vault had a final clearance of 4.80m/15-9 but on a soggy day in Eugene, Katahdin had fewer misses and claimed first place. Teammate Hunter Angove finished third, also with a clearance at 15-9.
