Ducks Down Terrapins on Final Day of Jane Sanders Classic
03/02/24 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 25 Oregon used some clutch hitting to score four runs in the first two innings and the Ducks went on to defeat Maryland, 4-2, Saturday on the final day of the Jane Sanders Classic.
A day after Maryland defeated Oregon, 4-0, Duck pitchers Taylour Spencer and Stevie Hansen combined to hold the Terrapins (6-12) to two runs on five hits.
"This team always responds," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. "They know what they want, they always respond. I think of the leadership we have. We have nine seniors, the most that we have ever had since I've been here. Just to see this group being player-led, that to me is when we are at our best."
How it Happened: Oregon (12-8) utilized some clutch situational hitting to score a run in the bottom of the first. Kai Luschar reached on a bunt single and stole second before Ariel Carlson walked. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. KK Humphreys hit into a fielder's choice where Luschar was thrown out, while Carlson advanced to third.
On the first pitch to the next batter, Alyssa Daniell laid down a squeeze bunt to third that brought Carlson home for a 1-0 lead.
Another bunt played an important role for the Ducks in the second inning.
Hanna Delgado singled and Ayanna Shaw was hit by a pitch. Tehya Bird executed a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position. Bird's effort paid off when Paige Sinicki's double to right center scored both runners for a 3-0 lead.
Luschar followed Bird with a grounder to short, but the throw to get Luschar sailed high over first base and Sinicki scored on the error.
From there it was Spencer's and Hansen's show.
Spencer pitched into the fourth inning before giving way to Hansen after allowing two runs on two hits. She struck out three.
Hansen shut out the Terrapins the rest of the game. She yielded just two hits, struck out two and walked one in improving to 2-3 on the season.
"Stevie had a gutsy performance today," said Lombardi. "Stevie has been working this year on trying to figure a couple of little things out and you can see that she did. She had really good movement, good speed. She did a good job on commanding the ball. I really like where she is at going into conference.
"Taylour is doing an exceptional job," Lombardi continued. "I think of her as a freshman and how she is handling business. We put her against a ton of tough teams this year and she continues to shine through. I love how they work together."

"I think you can look at it and think 'Man, that loss yesterday was bad for our record,' but I think it's a good turning point for us. We look at it and realize that what we need to do is different and that is how we came out today. We were gritty and our mindset changed, we weren't going to let them come back on our field and beat us on our own turf."

"The schedule that we have played will prepare us more for conference than any other year leading into conference. People are going to see us going into conference and seeing what our non-conference schedule has done for us."
Noteworthy: A day after her nine-game hitting streak ended, Luschar had two hits on Saturday to increase her Pac-12 leading total to 33 … Luschar also swiped her conference-best 15th base of the season … It was Hansen's third game in a row allowing no runs … The Ducks played in front of an announced crowd of 1,855 at Jane Sanders Stadium on Saturday, the largest of the weekend.
"(Playing at home) was amazing," said Daniell. "Coach always says it, 'Nobody's better built for playing in this weather than we are.' We practice in it every day. Being at the Jane is an unbelievable experience. It is one of the many reasons I came to Oregon, to play in front of this crowd that is so dedicated to cheering us on. It was amazing to be back."
On Deck: Oregon opens Pac-12 play by hosting No. 20 California in a three-game series that begins Friday at Jane Sanders Stadium (6 p.m.).
"We are very excited," said Daniell of opening Pac-12 play. "It is a fresh start, a reset. All of us are just very excited to be on the field. We are going to bring it this year."
