LOS ANGELES – Oregon escaped Los Angeles with a 68-60 win over USC, despite trailing by seven at halftime.
The Ducks struggled offensively in the first half and shot just 34 percent, connecting on nine field goal attempts. USC didn't shoot it much better, but early surges from Desmond Claude and Chibuzo Agbo gave the Trojans the early edge. Oregon continued to struggle offensively until a 10-0 run midway through the second half. Jackson Shelstad hit 12 free throws and Keeshawn Barthelemy hit four-of-five three pointers to lift the Ducks late.
How It Happened: The Ducks struggled in the first half, hitting just nine field goals for 23 points. Keeshawn Barthelemy was the lone bright spot with 10 points. Both Chibuzo Abgo (14 points) and Desmond Claude (12) reached double-digits in the first half for USC. The Ducks twice fouled Agbo on a three point attempt and he connected on all six free throws. Shelstad opened the second half with a transition three off a USC turnover and the Ducks started to gain momentum. Despite hitting just one of their next eight shots, Oregon stayed without striking distance with strong defensive play. USC won the next four minutes of play and went up by as many as 10 points at the under-15 media timeout.
Barthelemy again stopped the Trojan run with a three, followed by two free throws after USC head coach Eric Musselman received a technical foul. Down just 38-33, UO continued to feed the hot hand of Barthelemy and Shelstad. Oregon was able to tie the game after a string of free throws and missed shots from the Trojans. Keeshawn Barthelemy knocked down a wide open three to tie it, followed by a Shelstad three to take the lead for the first time since a 2-0 advantage to start the game. Angel made it a 10-zero run and forced USC to call timeout. The Ducks would then pull away for good, connecting on key free throws down the stretch.
