Flanagan, Birnbaum Collect Big Ten Awards

The postseason continues Nov. 15 with the NCAA West Regional in Colfax, Wash.
EUGENE, Ore. – An impressive Big Ten debut has resulted in a pair of postseason accolades for the UO cross country program. Shalane Flanagan has been named the Big Ten Women's Coach of the Year and Simeon Birnbaum was picked as the Big Ten Men's Freshman of the Year.
Additionally, Josh Schumacher and Anika Thompson represent the Ducks on the Sportsmanship Award Honorees list.
Flanagan led the UO women to a commanding win at last week's Big Ten Cross Country Championships in Savoy, Ill. Silan Ayyildiz was the individual champion followed closely by teammate Maddy Elmore in second place. The Ducks scored 33 points with their top five all inside the top 12 and topped a field that included five other ranked teams including No. 2 Washington and No. 11 Wisconsin.
Now in her third season with Oregon, Flanagan was the unanimous choice for Coach of the Year.
Birnbaum was fourth in the men's 8K at the Big Ten meet and the first freshman across the line. Earlier this season, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his efforts at the Cowboy Jamboree (Sept. 28). Birnbaum has finished among the Ducks' top three in his three appearances this year.
The UO men placed three inside the top three at the Big Ten Championships and finished third overall.
In Tuesday's release of the USTFCCCA national rankings, the Women of Oregon vaulted from No. 17 to No. 2 in the country. The men also saw a double-digit jump, going from No. 25 to No. 15 ahead of next week's NCAA West Region Championships.
