11/03/24 | Women's Volleyball
Michelle Ohwobete and Onye Ofoegbu led Oregon with 15 and 11 kills, respectively.
EUGENE, Ore. — Senior outside hitter Michelle Ohwobete put down a season-high 15 kills and the 10th-ranked Oregon volleyball team hit .380 collective in Saturday's home sweep of UCLA. With the win, the Ducks improve to 17-4 overall with a 9-3 mark in Big Ten play.
Oregon posted a 25-12, 25-21, 25-13 scoreline for its 11th straight-set victory of the year.
Ohwobete hit .438 against the Bruins, committing just one attack error in 32 swings. The Oakland, Calif., native added three aces, three digs and a pair of blocks in the win. Saturday marked her 10th showing of the season with multiple service aces and second-consecutive match with at least three.
Fellow senior Onye Ofoegbu added 11 kills also with just one attack error on 13 swings, good for a .769 hitting percentage. She has now reached double-digit kills in three-consecutive outings.
Redshirt freshman Cristin Cline dished out 40 assists in the three setter while guiding the Ducks to a .380 team hitting percentage. Noemie Glover and Mimi Colyer added nine and eight kills, respectively.
Defensively, Oregon held UCLA to a .119 efficiency including an -.031 figure in the opening frame. Senior libero Mackenzie Morris tied for the match high with 11 digs followed by Daley McClellan with eight and Colyer with seven. Glover and Ofoegbu each had three blocks.
How It Happened: UCLA (10-11, 4-8) won the first two points of the match but the Ducks responded in a bit way with a seven-point surge. The run featured a pair of Ohwobete aces. The lead hit double digits at 16-6 after Ofoegbu took care of an overpassed ball produced by a tough serve by McClellan. A successful Oregon challenge resulted in set point and Glover put the Ducks up 1-0 with a kill to the back line.
The second set was a much tighter affair that featured 11 ties and four lead changes. With the Bruins up 16-15, Oregon rattled off five of the next six points for the 20-17 advantage and UCLA timeout. Ofoegbu had two kills and a block during the surge. The Ducks maintained a cushion of at least two the remainder of the set and on their second set point, Colyer tooled the block for a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
Ohwobete tallied nine of her 15 kills in the second set, out-dueling Cheridyn Leverette of UCLA who had seven of her match-high 16 kills in game two.
The connection between Cline and Ofoegbu was on display early in the third set. Ofoegbu had three kills in the Ducks' first eight points, the final one forcing UCLA to call a timeout with UO leading 8-4. Ofoegbu had six of her 11 kills in the third set. Her last kill of the night extended the Oregon lead to 21-11. On the team's first match point, Ohwobete dealt the final blow with an ace.
Notable: Oregon has now won five-consecutive matches against UCLA, its longest winning streak in the all-time series … Ofoegbu is hitting .459 (36-8-61) in her last three matches … with an ace in the first set, McClellan became the fourth Duck with at least 20 aces this season: Ohwobete (27), Morris (24), Colyer (23) and McClellan (20).
Up Next: The Ducks are back on their home floor this Thursday to host No. 2 Nebraska (7 p.m., BTN).
