No. 13 Ducks Post Four-Set Win at UCLA
11/29/24 | Women's Volleyball
Oregon has won 10 of the past 13 against UCLA including six in a row.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — After dropping the opening set, the No. 13 Oregon volleyball team rallied for the four-set win (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22) Friday afternoon at UCLA. The Ducks end the regular season at 22-7 overall and a 14-6 conference mark in their first year in the Big Ten.
In a pair of milestone moments, Onye Ofoegbu reached 500 career blocks and Michelle Ohwobete had the 1,000th dig of her standout career. Both are already members of the 1,000-kill club. The two began their respective collegiate careers at UC Irvine and UCSB.
With the result, Oregon has now won 10 of the past 13 in the head-to-head with UCLA including six in a row.
Mimi Colyer posted her fifth 20-kill effort of the season—all during Big Ten play—with 21 kills coupled with 12 digs to complete her team-leading ninth double-double. She was one of three Ducks to post a double-double along with Ohwobete (13, kills, 18 digs) and Cristin Cline (52 assists, 13 digs). The team hit .251 against UCLA.
Noemie Glover had 10 kills to reach double figures for the ninth time this year and fifth time in the past six matches. Ofoegbu and Mia Tvrdy combined for 15 kills in the middle.
Defensively, Oregon held the Bruins to a .138 hitting percentage with the help of 80 digs and 10.0 total team blocks. Libero Mackenzie Morris led the floor defense with 19 digs and is now averaging 4.01 digs per set during conference play. Ofoegbu led all players with seven blocks followed by four from Glover.
How It Happened: With the first set tied at 15-all, UCLA (14-15, 8-12) rattled off five of the next seven points and maintained its lead through the rest of the opening frame. The Ducks saved three set points with kills from Tvrdy, Glover and Colyer but the home Bruins took the 1-0 match lead after an extended rally ended with an Oregon attack error.
The visitors faced an early 5-3 deficit in the second but responded with three straight, capping the push with a Colyer-Ofoegbu tandem block and a 6-5 lead. Oregon never relinquished that advantage. An ace from Morris pushed the lead to 14-10 and the Ducks led 15-12 at the media timeout. The Bruins pulled to within one point three times, lastly with UO leading 19-18, but Oregon answered with a 4-1 mini run to re-establish control of the set.
With two blocks and a kill, Ofoegbu had a hand in the Ducks' last three points of the set. After pushing the team to set point, she teamed up with Ohwobete for a block to secure set two and even the match.
Like Friday's opener, the third set featured nine ties. The teams were tied at 17-all when the Ducks put together another 4-1 run which proved to be the decisive move in the frame. Ofoegbu and Colyer each had a kill to put a bow on the surge and force UCLA to call a timeout. On the Ducks' second set point, a quick side out on a Tvrdy kill gave the team a lead on the match scoreboard.
Another late-set mini run was the difference for Oregon in the fourth set at Pauley Pavilion. The Ducks turned a two-point deficit into a three-point lead with an 8-3 rally. Oregon got kills from five different players in that stretch. Back-to-back kills from Glover and Tvrdy extended the lead to 22-18 but UCLA kept it close, pulling to within two three more times.
On match point, Colyer ended a rally and secured the win with a tip to the deep corner out of the reach of a diving UCLA defender. The Lincoln, Calif., native had six kills in the final set and committed just one attack error over the last three frames.
Notable: Oregon picked up 80 or more digs for the second time in as many matches; a season-high 82 digs in the previous match against Purdue … reached double-digit blocks for the 15th time this season including the past seven matches … overcame a season-high 18 service errors.
Up Next: The NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship bracket will be revealed this Sunday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m. PT on ESPN. The top-16 overall seeds will host the first and second rounds beginning next week.
