Ducks Stay Undefeated, Advance to Championship Game in Vegas
11/27/24 | Men's Basketball
LAS VEGAS – The Oregon Ducks remained undefeated and secured their spot in the Players Era Festival championship game with a 78-68 win over San Diego State on Tuesday.
Oregon dominated the battle for the boards, outrebounding the Aztecs 41-24 and 16-6 on the offensive glass, and countered second half runs from SDSU with a number of clutch buckets to improve to 7-0 on the season. TJ Bamba was one of five Ducks in double-figures, setting a season high in scoring for the second day in a row as he led the Ducks with 22 points.
How It Happened: The Ducks jumped out to an early lead thanks to early buckets from Bamba, Nate Bittle and Brandon Angel, but turnovers opened the door for San Diego State to bridge the early gap. Five UO turnovers led to a 6-0 Aztec run, and the Ducks saw themselves trailing at the 10 minute mark, 19-17, before Bamba's first three of the afternoon put Oregon back on top.
Both sides traded baskets heading into the under-four timeout and went back to the benches with the score tied, 27-27. The Ducks took control after that final media timeout, ending the half on a 16-4 run to take a 10-point lead at the break. The UO backcourt led the charge in the final five minutes of the opening period, as Jackson Shelstad and Keeshawn Barthelemy combined for 12 of the Ducks' 16 points during the run. 18 of Oregon's 41 points in the first half came off offensive rebounds.
A pair of buckets by Bamba and a layup from Angel extended the Ducks' lead to 46-33 quickly out of the halftime break, their largest of the day. The Aztecs hung tough, however, and took momentum midway through the second half, using a 9-0 run to cut the UO lead to three, 56-53, with 10:58 to play.
Angel, Bamba and Barthelemy knocked down massive three-pointers on consecutive possessions to get the Oregon fans in MGM Grand Garden Arena back in the action and stretch the lead back out to eight. A pair of SDSU baskets inside cut the Oregon lead to 65-61 with 7:24 to play, but just like in the first half, the Ducks took control as the clock wound down. Shelstad was fouled on a three-point attempt and sank all three free throws to spark a 13-7 run over the final seven minutes of play to seal the 78-68 victory.
Notable: TJ Bamba (22 points, 5 assists), Keeshawn Barthelemy (16 points, 5 steals), Jackson Shelstad (12 point, 4 assists), Brandon Angel (12 points, 6 rebounds) and Nate Bittle (11 points, 9 rebounds) all scored in double-figures … The Ducks shot 44.6% from the field and 45.5% from deep.
Up Next: Oregon will take on the winner of Rutgers and Alabama in the championship game on Saturday, tipping off at 6:30 p.m. PT (TNT).
