No. 11 Oregon extended its winning streak to 11 in a row with Thursday’s straight-set victory.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 11 Oregon volleyball team picked up a road sweep Thursday and extended its win streak to 11 with a 25-23, 25-21, 25-14 victory over Ohio State. The Ducks improve to 11-1 overall with a 3-0 mark in Big Ten play.
Mimi Colyer led the team with 16 kills coupled with a .438 hitting efficiency against the Buckeyes. Cristin Cline dished out 37 assists in the win, spreading the wealth with four players putting down at least seven kills. Noemie Glover had eight kills on the right while Onye Ofoegbu (.429) and Michelle Ohwobete each registered seven kills.
The Ducks hit .340 as a team, their sixth time at .300 or better this season.
Senior libero Mackenzie Morris tallied a match-high 14 digs followed by nine from Daley McClellan. The Ducks finished the night with eight aces with three by Cline, two apiece from Colyer and McClellan and one off the hand of Maya De Los Reyes.
How It Happened: The first set featured 14 ties, lastly at 19-all after an ace by McClellan. Oregon won four of the next five points to create some cushion on the scoreboard. The 23-20 advantage matched the largest lead by either team in the opening frame. Colyer pushed the Ducks to set point (24-21) with a kill out of the back row.
Ohio State (7-6, 0-3) pulled to within one but after an extended rally, Cline went over on two for the set-clinching tally. It was her third kill of the set.
McClellan now leads the team with 13 aces this season. The Canby, Ore., native has at least one ace in 11 of 12 matches this season including nine straight. McClellan is one of four UO players with at least 10 aces this year along with Colyer (12), Morris (12) and Ohwobete (11).
With the score tied at 5-5 in the second, the Ducks put together a four-point run to force Ohio State to call a timeout. The push featured kills by Glover and Ohwobete and one of Cline's three service winners. The home team responded to pull even at 11-all but Oregon rattled off seven of the next nine points for its decisive move.
The Buckeyes got back within two but after another kill by Glover and OSU attack error, the lead was back to four at 22-18. Ohio State got a kill from Emily Londot to cut its deficit to two but again, Colyer gave the Ducks set point with her 11th kill of the night. Ofoegbu and Ohwobete put a bow on the next rally—and set—with a tandem block of Londot.
Londot led all players with 17 kills but Oregon held her to a .205 hitting percentage over the three-set match.
With the two-set lead in hand, the Ducks sprinted out to a 9-2 advantage in the third and eventually pushed the lead to 19-9 with Cline's third ace. After an Ohwobete kill put the team within a point of victory, Colyer and Ohwobete teamed up for another block to secure the sweep.
Up Next: The Ducks' back-to-back weekend continues Friday at No. 3 Penn State. The match will air on the Big Ten Network at 4 p.m. (PT) with Jason Knapp and Emily Ehman on the call. Oregon's next home match is Wednesday, Oct. 9, against USC (6 p.m., BTN).
