ATLANTA — The Oregon women's golf team came up just short in a dramatic match that saw two pairings go to extra holes on Tuesday, dropping a 3-2 decision to LSU in the semifinals of the East Lake Cup.
In a rematch of last year's NCAA Championships quarterfinals, the No. 13 Ducks got points from sophomore Kiara Romero and freshman Suvichaya Vinijchaitham, but the No. 16 Tigers won both matches that went to extra holes to come out on top.
Oregon will face UCLA on Wednesday in the East Lake Cup consolation match, another rematch from last year's NCAA Championships. The Ducks fell just short against the Bruins in the national semifinals.
How it Happened: Romero bounced back from an uncharacteristic performance in the lone round of stroke play on Monday to dominate her match on Tuesday. Facing LSU's Taylor Riley, Romero made birdie to win the first hole of the day and didn't trail the rest of the way, quickly taking a 3 up lead after winning back-to-back holes at No. 5 and No. 6.
Romero was 3 up at the turn and 4 up through 11 before losing a hole for the first time at No. 12, but she bounced back to win two of the next three holes and win, 5&3.
Vinijchaitham made an impressive comeback to put Oregon's second point on the board. The freshman was 3 down through eight holes before winning at No. 9 and No. 10 to pull within one. LSU's Elsa Svensson got back to 2 up with a win at No. 11, but Vinijchaitham surged ahead with wins on three of the next four holes.
Vinijchaitham was 1 up through 17 holes before an impressive up-and-down for a birdie at No. 18 gave her a 2 up victory.
LSU secured its first point with a win by Aine Donegan over Ting-Hsuan Huang, leaving freshman Tong An and Karen Tsuru on the course for the Ducks.
An was 1 up through 14 holes, but LSU's Roclo Tejedo won at No. 18 to force extra holes and then was able to win on the 19th. Tsuru's match played out similarly, as she was 1 up through 16 holes before her opponent, Josefin Widal, came away with a win at No. 18 and then prevailed in extra holes to secure the match for LSU.
