Ducks Knock Off Razorbacks in San Diego
12/20/22 | Women's Basketball
SAN DIEGO — Grace VanSlooten dropped 26 points, Endyia Rogers added 20 and No. 16 Oregon handed No. 17 Arkansas its first loss of the season, 85-78, to begin the San Diego Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Pechanga Arena.
The Ducks (10-1), who trailed by as many as seven in the fourth quarter, rallied with 30 fourth-quarter points to give head coach Kelly Graves his 200th win while at Oregon. Down 66-59 with 8:30 to play, UO went on an 11-3 run capped by a go-ahead 3-pointer by Chance Gray with 5:05 to go.
"The fans had to have been pleased with that – well played by both teams, up and down and making big plays late," Graves said. "I'm so proud of our team. This is a couple games now in the last two weeks where we've been down seven or eight in the mid to late fourth quarter, and we made the run and made some key plays."
After Arkansas trimmed Oregon's lead to two at 77-75, Gray knocked down a second 3-pointer to push the Ducks' lead to five with 59 seconds to go. Rogers and Te-Hina Paopao combined to hit five three throws in the final minute to hand UO its first win over a top-25 team this season.
The Ducks shot 10-of-18 from the field in the fourth, including 5-for-9 from downtown, while limiting the Razorbacks (13-1) to 4-for-17 shooting (3-for-8 from 3-point range). Rogers scored eight points in the final quarter while Paopao added seven. Paopao, an Oceanside, Calif. native, scored all 12 of her points in the second half.
VanSlooten matched her career-high point total in leading all scorers, finishing the first half with 18 points. Rogers produced her second 20-point outing of the season while handing out six assists and Phillipina Kyei grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
"It was just one of those games that everybody contributed and everybody made plays when it counted," said Graves. "That's a good win, that's a good team we just played."
Notable: Oregon's six-game win streak is the team's longest of the season … Graves collected the 200th victory of his Oregon career to become just the second coach in UO history to reach the milestone … The win was the Ducks' first over a ranked team this season.
Quotable:
Head coach Kelly Graves on his team making key plays in the second half…
"Obviously Grace was phenomenal, but how about Ahlise Hurst making a big three late. How about Chance Gray coming up big. Paopao was money in the second half, didn't score in the first but had 12 in the second. For them to come out and play the way they did, it says a lot about the character of this team and I am really proud of them."
Graves on reaching the 200-win milestone at Oregon…
"It's an honor to be their coach. I am blessed to have a great team and great support from the administration. We've got it pretty good."
Forward Grace VanSlooten on the game plan against Arkansas…
"We did a great job scouting them. We knew exactly what they wanted to do and I think we did a good job of taking it away. Coach Graves told us a couple times they were the nation's leading team in free throws attempted, so we knew they were going to try and get in there and get some fouls on us. I think we did a good job of staying straight up and doing our best to just play them fair.
VanSlooten on being down in the fourth quarter…
"I honesty wasn't nervous, I knew we had it. At times like that we just have to come together and pull out the team win. We all have really great chemistry, especially with such a small team. We know exactly what we want to do and we just take advantage of that.
VanSlooten on playing with guards Paopao and Rogers…
"I love playing with them. Just to have guards that do have that experience and they know exactly where I want the ball and what I want to do. For them to know that, it just makes the game so much easier on my part.
Up Next: The Ducks will play in the title game of the San Diego Invitational Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. PT against No. 3 Ohio State (FloSports).
