Lu, Chacon Lead Ducks to Another Top-Five Finish
03/09/21 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon women's golf team wrapped up its ninth top-five finish in its last 10 tournaments on Tuesday at Sewailo Golf Club, riding terrific individual performances from Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu and Briana Chacon to a fourth-place showing at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational.
Â
The Ducks entered the final round in fourth place after shooting 2 over across 36 holes on Monday, and Oregon held its position with an even-par 288 on Tuesday. UO has placed in the top four in all three of its tournaments to kick off the 2021 spring season.
Â
Lu gave the Ducks a runner-up finisher for the second straight week, tying for second place individually after closing with a 3-under 69 on Tuesday. The Taiwan native – who opened with a 5-under 67 in the first round – was in contention throughout the day and finished the week at 7-under-par, just three strokes back of the individual medalist. Chacon matched Lu with a 3-under 69 on Tuesday – her third straight round of par or better – and joined Lu in the individual top 10 at 4-under-par, in a tie for sixth place.
Â
How it Happened: Lu started the final round just two strokes off the lead and remained in the hunt with a phenomenal start. The freshman went on a run of four birdies in six holes to get to 4 under on the day going into 11, and she made par on each of the next six holes. A bogey on 17 was the lone blemish of the day for Lu, who broke 70 for the second time this week to earn the best finish of her young career.
Â
Chacon also got off to a terrific start on Tuesday, using three birdies to get to 3-under-par through her first eight holes. The sophomore twice bounced back from bogeys with a birdie, and finished with three straight pars to come in with a 69. Chacon is the only Duck to shoot par or better in all three rounds in Tucson.
Â
Ching-Tzu Chen and Tze-Han (Heather) Lin rounded out the counting scores for the Ducks with a 2-over 74 and a 4-over 76, respectively. Chen had five birdies in the round while Lin racked up 12 total pars.
