CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Brooke Yanez dominated in the circle with an 11-strikeout effort while the Oregon offense came through with timely runs in a 6-3 win over No. 25 Northwestern to close play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Ducks are off to a 14-0 start, tied for the second-longest winning streak to start the season with the 2015 team and trailing just the 2017 squad.
How it Happened: Per usual, the Ducks got to work early offensively once again. Haley Cruse got the scoring started in the second inning, driving in Jasmine Sievers and Deijah Pangilinan, both of whom walked to start off the frame. Terra McGowan followed one batter later with an RBI ground-rule double down the right field line and Rachel Cid delivered an RBI single as the Ducks batted around in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Northwestern cut the Oregon lead to just one in the bottom of the third, behind Maeve Nelson's three-run home run. The Ducks responded by adding a key insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a wild play with Pangilinan at the plate. The freshman doubled into the left field corner and came all the way around to score on a poor relay throw by the left fielder to make it 5-3.
Pangilinan drove in another insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to three. Yanez retired the final 10 batters she faced, picking up four strikeouts over that span to put the game away.
Notables: Yanez's 11-strikeout effort was her second double-digit strikeout performance of the season … The complete-game effort was the 50th of Yanez's career … The junior finished the weekend 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA and 24 strikeouts to just three walks over 16.0 innings … Cruse ended the weekend 12-for-18 (.667) with 10 runs scored, six RBIs, two doubles and two triples after going 1-for-4 and driving in a pair of runs … The Ducks hit .386 over the weekend and outscored opponents 39-6 over the five games … 20 of Oregon's 39 hits over the weekend were for extra bases, as 11 different players delivered an extra-base hit … Pangilinan turned in her first career multi-hit game going 2-for-2 with two runs scored an RBI and a walk … Bunker finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk … The sophomore finished the weekend hitting .389 with a pair of doubles and six runs scored after missing most of last weekend.
On Deck: The Ducks turn to Eugene before heading to Stillwater and Tulsa, Okla. for one last nonconference road trip, beginning Friday.
