Ducks Continue Perfect Start with Run-Rule Win
02/16/20 | Softball
HOUSTON – Samaria Diaz continued her strong weekend in the circle with a dominant shutout win while No. 21 Oregon got steady production offensively, capped off by Rachel Cid's walk-off three-run home run in the sixth inning in a 9-0 win over Dayton Sunday.
Â
How it Happened: Oregon got on the board in the bottom of the second, getting a couple of runs on three hits to take a 2-0 advantage. Vallery Wong accounted for both runs, driving in Mya Felder with an RBI single for the first, then coming across to score from third when Jasmine Sievers got caught in a rundown between first and second.
Â
The Ducks extended the lead with a pair of runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. Sievers made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the fourth to score Wong, before she came around to score on an error by the Flyers' catcher on a squeeze bunt attempt. Ariel Carlson stretched the lead to 6-0 with her second homer of the weekend – a two-run bomb down the left field line that scored Terra McGowan.
Â
Cid came up with runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and ripped a three-run opposite field bomb to end it, scoring Maddie Hopper and Haley Cruse.
Â
Diaz got off to a bit of a rocky start giving up a leadoff single and only getting out of the first inning unscathed when Lexi Wagner, Jasmine Sievers and Terra McGowan combined to cut down a runner at the plate on a double. From there, though, the senior dominated allowing just two hits over the final five innings while picking up seven of her eight strikeouts over that span.
Â
Box Score Notes: Diaz threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts and no walks while giving up just four hits … Cid went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored with a home run … Sievers finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored … McGowan turned in a 2-for-4 day with a run scored … Wong went 1-for-2 with a run scored and made a great defensive play on a pop up in shallow right field to save a run in the third inning … Carlson was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs … The Ducks committed their first error of the season after going the first eight games without one.
Â
Weekend Notables: Diaz ended the weekend 3-0 and gave up no runs over 15 innings pitched with 18 strikeouts and just two walks … Cid went 7-for-15 (.467) and drove in eight runs while hitting two home runs and scoring seven runs in the four games … As a team, six different Oregon players combined to hit nine home runs, with Cid, Carlson and Mya Felder hitting two … The Ducks outscored their opponents 40-9 (10.0-2.3 per game) … McGowan went 6-for-12 with a home run, double, three RBIs and five runs scored … On the season, the redshirt freshman is hitting .452 with four doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs … Felder hit .500 over the four games with a pair of bombs and four RBIs.
