Offensive Explosion Keys Doubleheader Sweep
02/15/20 | Softball
Game 1 (Oregon 18, Dayton 3) – Oregon struck early and never looked back as the Ducks' offense took advantage of mistakes in an 18-3 win over Dayton in the opener of the doubleheader.
How it Happened: The Ducks got things going early once again, this time using the long ball to take a 3-0 lead after one. Terra McGowan roped a solo shot out to right center two batters in to make it 1-0, before Ariel Carlson crushed her first career home run deep to left center for a two-run bomb that scored Rachel Cid.
Oregon extended the lead with a four-run third inning to make it 7-0. Cid drove in Haley Cruse, who was hit by a pitch to open the frame, with an RBI fielder's choice before Mya Felder and Vallery Wong each drew bases-loaded walks. Following a pitching change, Hannah Galey delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Carlson to plate Oregon's fourth run of the inning without the benefit of a hit.
After Dayton pushed across a run in the bottom of the third, the Ducks answered with an 11-run fourth inning to make it 18-1. Oregon sent 17 batters to the plate while nine different players drove in runs in the frame. Cid, Wong and Shaye Bowden all delivered RBI singles to get the scoring started before Galey worked a bases-loaded walk, stretching the lead to 11-1.
Jasmine Sievers followed with a two-run single, plating Wong and pinch-runner Jazzy Contreras, and Cruse came through with a sacrifice fly and error. Lexi Wagner kept the line moving with a pinch-hit RBI single to score Sievers before Cruse came around to score on a fielder's choice. Maddie Hopper capped off the scoring with a two-run single to center to drive in Cid and Wagner.
Game 1 Box Score Notes: Oregon has now put up double-digit runs in an inning twice this year following the 11-run fourth … The Ducks scored 10 runs in the second inning against George Washington last week … The 11 runs are the most the Ducks have scored in an inning since a 13-run inning against Bryant on March 11, 2018 … Oregon had 11 different players drive in runs, getting multi-RBI performances from six different players … Carlson led the way with a three-RBI day, while scoring three runs and going 1-for-2 … Cid scored four runs and finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs … Cruse came across to score three times while driving in a run … Hopper, Wong, Galey and Sievers each drove in two runs apiece.
Game 2 (Oregon 9, Houston 4) – Oregon found itself in a tight game with Houston in the middle innings, but the Ducks scored five unanswered runs to end the game, led by four home runs in a 9-4 win over the Cougars.
How it Happened: After McGowan put the Ducks in front for good with a two-out RBI double scoring Cruse in the fourth, Oregon put it away with four solo homers over the next two innings to take a 9-4 lead.
Cid hit the first of three fifth-inning homers with a leadoff solo shot to straight-away center field to make it 6-4. Two batters later, Felder hit a towering shot out to left making it 7-4 before Wong blasted her first career home run with an opposite-field shot. Cruse led off the sixth inning with her first bomb of the season, a line drive homer down the left field line to stretch the lead to five.
For the eighth straight game to start the year, the Ducks got on the board first. Felder reached with a one-out single in the second inning and later came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Cid was responsible for all three runs in the third inning, driving in Cruse and McGowan with a two-run single before coming around to score all the way from second on a wild pitch and error.
Houston answered with a four-run bottom of the third to tie things up at four apiece, doing all their damage with two outs. After Oregon starter Jordan Dail got the first two batters of the inning, Sarah Queen hit a three-run homer to make it a one-run game. Doubles by the next two batters tied the game at four.
Diaz once again delivered a clutch performance out of the bullpen, throwing 4.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks. After giving up hits to the first two batters she faced, the senior retired 12 of the final 13 Houston hitters while facing the minimum thanks to a line-drive double play to end the sixth.
Game 2 Box Score Notes: The four home runs are the most Oregon has had in a game since it beat Kansas on Feb. 8, 2019 in last year's season opener … Cid led the charge offensively, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored … Cruse homered and scored three runs while finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI … McGowan delivered the go-ahead RBI double and went 2-for-4 with a run scored … Felder turned in another strong day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks.
Overall Notables: The Ducks scored 27 runs in the two games, putting up crooked numbers in five innings and scoring in eight of 12 frames today … Eleven different players drove in runs in the two games, with eight of them recording multiple RBIs over the two games … Cid finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with five RBIs, six runs scored and a home run … McGowan was 3-for-6 with two RBIs, three runs scored, a homer and a double … Cruse scored six runs – three in each game – while going 2-for-5 with a homer and an RBI … Oregon has now scored first in all eight games this year … This is just the second time in school history that Oregon has had multiple games with 18-plus runs (2016).
On Deck: The Ducks wrap up play in the Houston Classic by playing Dayton Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
