Ducks Hold Devils At Bay
01/11/20 | Men's Basketball
Arizona State mounted several comeback attempts Saturday night, but Oregon fought off each one to win at Matthew Knight Arena, 78-69.
EUGENE, Ore. — Completing a sweep of the first Pac-12 homestand of the season, the No. 9 Oregon men's basketball team had the lead for all but 39 seconds of Saturday's game, a 78-69 victory over Arizona State before 9,213 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
Payton Pritchard tied his career high with 29 points, getting to the rim for a couple of crucial baskets down the stretch as ASU tried to come from behind. Pritchard's big game came two days after his fadeaway jumper forced overtime in the Ducks' win over Arizona.
How It Happened: Pritchard opened the game with a three-pointer, setting the stage for a 6-of-9 performance on the night from behind the arc. Arizona State answered with a three and led briefly at 6-3 and then 8-6, but another three-pointer by Pritchard put the Ducks up 9-8 and they never trailed again.

The UO senior point guard hit a third three for a 17-12 lead, and on the next possession crossed over his defender before uncorking a no-look pass to Shakur Juiston for a basket that made it 19-12. Arizona State fought back to tie the game at 24-24, but Chris Duarte got the Ducks rolling again with a three-pointer and then a layup. The UO lead never dropped below five the rest of the first half.
Oregon's lead reached as much as 14 early in the second half, the first time on a three-pointer by Pritchard for a 45-31 advantage. Duarte got to the rim to put the Ducks up 49-36, but then Arizona State began to claw back, with high-scoring guard Remy Martin hitting a jumper to get ASU within 53-48.
That was the first of three times that the Sun Devils closed within five in the second half, but each time Oregon had an answer. It was 65-60 when Pritchard found his way to the basket and added an and-one for an eight-point lead, and the Ducks made their free throws down the stretch after ASU closed within 72-67 in the final two minutes.

Who Stood Out: Pritchard matched his previous career high of 29 points first set when he was a sophomore and matched earlier this season against Texas Southern. He added six assists with three rebounds, and made all five of his free-throw attempts. Duarte added 20 points, providing the secondary scoring that ASU lacked behind its star guard Martin. Juiston had his best game since returning from a knee injury, with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Up Next: The Ducks go back on the road beginning at Washington State on Thursday (6 p.m., FS1).
