Ducks Split Doubleheader, Finish Weekend 3-1
04/07/19 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Oregon softball team completed a 3-1 weekend with a doubleheader split on Sunday, picking up a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh before falling to Missouri, 8-0, at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
The Ducks (16-19) will return to Pac-12 play next weekend with a three-game series at No. 1 ranked UCLA.
GAME ONE – OREGON 4, PITTSBURGH 3
How it Happened: Senior April Utecht put Oregon out in front in the first inning with her seventh home run of the season. After Haley Cruse reached on an error to open the game, Utecht blasted an opposite field, two-run homer with two outs to give starter Jordan Dail an early 2-0 lead.
Pittsburgh (6-32) got one back in the bottom half on a solo home run and the next batter followed with a double, but Dail retired the next three batters in order to keep the Ducks in front.
Back-to-back singles by Allee Bunker and Rachel Cid got the second inning started, and Bunker came around to score on a pair of Pittsburgh wild pitches. The Ducks were held scoreless in the third and fourth before some clutch two-out hitting in the fifth. Senior Cherish Burks doubled down the third-base line with two outs, and freshman Jasmine Sievers followed with an RBI single to make it 4-1.
Dail issued walks in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings but stranded the runner each time, and the sophomore lefty put the Panthers down in order in the sixth for her fifth straight hitless inning. Dail struck out back-to-back batters in the seventh after a leadoff single, but Pitt made it a one-run game on a two-run home run. Dail bounced right back, though, locking up her third win in two days with her seventh strikeout of the game.
At the Plate: Utecht drove in two with her seventh home run, Sievers finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and Burks, Bunker, Cid and Shaye Bowden each had a hit.
In the Circle: Dail improved to 13-8 on the season with her third complete-game win in a span of 24 hours. The Forest, Va., native allowed just four hits over seven full innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.
GAME TWO – MISSOURI 8, OREGON 0 (5)
How it Happened: Freshman starter Kailey Krueger worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and put the Tigers down in order in the second, but Missouri loaded the bases in the third on a walk and a pair of bunt singles and then took a 4-0 lead on a grand slam.
Missouri added one more in the fourth on an RBI double and then pushed three across in the fifth to secure the run-rule win.
The Ducks struggled to get anything going at the plate against Missouri starter Madi Norman, who issued three walks in a five-inning no-hitter.
At the Plate: Hannah Galey and April Utecht were the only Ducks to reach base, with Galey working two walks and Utecht reaching on a walk and an error.
In the Circle: Krueger (0-4) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, with a strikeout over 3.1 innings pitched. Rachel Cid moved from third base to the circle to help out the Ducks' pitching staff, allowing four runs in 1.1 innings of relief.
Notable: Utecht is now tied with Cid for the team lead in home runs with seven … Cruse saw a six-game hitting streak come to an end … Oregon won the three-game season series against Missouri, 2-1 … The Ducks are now 3-0 all-time against Pitt.
Up Next: The Ducks will open a three-game series against top-ranked UCLA on Friday in Los Angeles (7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
