Dail Leads Ducks to 2-0 Day
04/06/19 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sophomore Jordan Dail threw her second complete game of the day as the Oregon softball team capped a 2-0 Saturday with a 4-1 win over Missouri at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
After allowing just one hit over five innings earlier in the day in a 9-1 run-rule win over Pittsburgh, Dail held Missouri to just one run on two hits to give Oregon (15-18) a sweep on the first day of the Mizzou Tournament. The Ducks will face both teams again on Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at 7 a.m. PT.
How it Happened: Freshman Rachel Cid got the offense going in the second inning to give Dail an early lead. Allee Bunker singled with one out, the first of a season-high three hits for the freshman, and Cid walloped an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left field for a two-run bomb to put the Ducks up 2-0. A pair of walks kept the inning alive with two outs, and senior Cherish Burks came through with an RBI single up the middle to make it a 3-0 Oregon lead.
Missouri (20-16) put a runner on third with one out in each of the first two innings, but Dail stranded both and then set the Tigers down in order in the third and the fourth. Oregon loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on a walk, another single by Bunker and a Missouri error, and freshman Hannah Galey lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring in a run and give Dail a 4-0 cushion.
The Tigers got their first run and hit of the game against Dail in the fifth, a leadoff solo home run by Kara Decker. The next batter doubled to right field, but Dail retired the next three batters in order to end the inning and the final nine batters she faced to finish the game and secure a 2-0 day for the Ducks.
In the Circle: Dail improved to 12-8 on the season after striking out seven Tigers with only one walk in seven complete innings. The Forest, Va., native gave up just two runs on three hits with 16 strikeouts and three walks over 12.0 total innings while pitching the Ducks to both wins on Saturday.
At the Plate: Bunker went 3-for-3 for the first three-hit game of her career, and Cid reclaimed the team lead with her seventh homer of the season. Burks finished with a hit and an RBI, Galey drove in a run and Haley Cruse went 1-for-3.
Notable: Cruse extended her team-high hitting streak to six straight games … Bunker now has multiple hits in three of Oregon's last five games … Senior April Utecht tied her career-high with two walks … The Ducks are 2-0 this season against Missouri - Oregon beat the Tigers 6-1 on opening weekend at the Kajikawa Classic - and 8-6 all-time.
Up Next: Oregon will face Pitt at 7 a.m. PT on Sunday before closing the weekend against Missouri at 9:30 a.m. PT (SEC Network).
